Nvidia Geforce 560 GTX is an excelent card it costs 150 euros in my country (Serbia) should be cheaper in england. If its out of your price range go with the Nvidia Geforce 550 it should be below 100 pounds.

Errr, you do know that Nvida is just the platform used by thousands of graphics card makers and they vary from truly stunning to absolutely useless?

OP - Could you say a bit more about the computer this card is for? RAM, CPU, Power supply, Operating system, size etc ?

It's pretty hard to recommend a graphics card if we don't know what it has to fit with.

    ATI HD 6850.

Ive got the MSI Cyclone version. Factory OCed and custom cooler. The fastest, coolest and quietest 6850.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMrXiKczn9g

That version is around £110 but an average 6850 is around £90 - £100.

Can play everything maxed out (as long as you arnt doing like eyefinity or some crazy res), and because its the 6xxx series they scale really well, so when needed in a year or so you can added another one for close to 90 - 100% increase in performance.

Every month tom's hardware does best hardware for money review. Here is the best graphics card for money for September 2011. Don't listen to people saying: "I like this card". Everyone has a different rig, setup, resolution, settings, drivers and they all play different games. On top of that some people are happy with 30FPS while others don't settle for anything bellow 120FPS. Finally, most people don't even know how graphics cards work or have nothing to compare to.

As 3D Professional, go with Nvidia brand graphics card, it will have much more debth than ATI brand cards.

GTX 560 is cheap and very powerfull, you wont regret it :) i'm using GTX 260 for long time now and still i can run everything maxed without problems and do 3D related stuff for the industry (renderings and stuff like that)

    all heil CUDA!

ASUS Direct CU Radeon HD 6850!!!

I highly recommend it, costs about £100 and is a beast of a card I play crysis 2 maxed out 1920x1080 smooth as can be. It is very powerful for all the latest games that I have tested it with.

    :D

Just make sure the rest of components in the PC are up to the task, or else you will just create a bottleneck. I recommend at least a 3ghz+ quad core and 4gb ram or more DRR3 if possible. :D

That card is OK but the 128bit memory bus will strain the frame rates at higher resolutions such as 1920x1080.

Try and get 256bit at the minimum if your son has a large screen resolution it will help with memory bandwidth needed to fill the extra pixels on the screen.

NVidia is a good way to go. Very popular graphics card for sure. Check out the specs about it and see what you think.
