Which forum software would you say is the best in terms of user experience, SEO, ability to customize, modern layout, tablet/mobile support, etc..?

Vbulletin?

Try NodeBB
Its also one of the good open source forum software.
Good Luck!!

Vbulletin, just stay away from Vbulletin 5 connect! the V.4 is great!

Go with MyBB its easy to use and have lots features and If you can afford go with Vbulletin 4.

Me thinks that Vbulletin 4 is the best (*from what i can see).

All the Big Sites use that one...and they have $. It makes sense that they would go for the best one.

Its all depends on your experience and you preference. If you are security freak and like to buy things then you can have vBulletin. Of course VBulletin has some of the best SEO optimized stuff, If you are non experienced and want simple functions then Mybb is best for you. but be warned that myBB forums get too much spammed and you will have to rely on addons/Plugins to get protection. PHPBB is similar to vBulliten and of course all the features are for advance users.
SMF script is new and good but the options are limited and you will have to customize many things.....

i only use invision power board. much better software than the other paid ones in may respects (i own a license to them all, dont even use vb or xenforo). Only draw back to IPB is it is not responsive yet. IPB4 is supposed to come out in the next few months. the new version will be responsive.

Vbulletin 4 have many security holes and big forums use vb 3 version.
Xenforo the best software.

Discourse looks pretty awesome.
It's open source and free and looks to be a nice update to traditional forum software (much needed!).

I bought Vbulletin for a client. Installed version 5 and nothing worked. It took almost 2 minutes to post a new post. I wrote Vbulletin and they said it was normal and that I needed a new bigger server. So I got a bigger dedicated server for $ XXX a month and now it took ONLY 1.5 minutes to get a post posted. Awesome!!!

So my client becomes anxious and tells me to scrap Vbulletin 5. I say "let's not waste the 250 bucks, let's try VB 4". Great - it works but it looks soooo year 2005...... what do we do now? Go with Xenforo.

Yup, the VB license was U$ 250 thrown right in the garbage. Version 5 simply does not work. They fucked it up real good. So I'm waiting for them to fix VB 5 and perhaps I can use the license on some future project.
