The easiest solution to this problem is to just go by a DVD player that plays DivX-encoded files. Magnavox makes one for about $40 at Walmart and it works great. Plays MPG/AVI/DVD/MP3/CD you name it.

For the rogue file you download online that isn't encoded in divx, you'll need to convert the file to VOB files and then burn it. I think TMPGEnc will do that (or vitualdub), but I cant remember, it's been so long.

I should note, the video quality wont improve any by converting it to DVD format. What you see is what you get.
