I don't think there is a 'best combination' because there are too many external factors such as your competition, your domain and how much you want to spend. Plus no-one *really* knows what google is looking for.
I've bought .edu backlinks from vilambara and had good results on one site and not so good on another site. I've used a link pyramid off fiverr to good effect on one site and not so good on another.
From what I've read link diversity is key as well and sometimes it's best just to experiment and see what works best for you.

No one "knows" what google is after so diversifying is key if you are using manual or "forced" linkbuilding so to speak.
What they TELL you they want is "buzz" and great content, so if for some reason 100,000 dont link to your site after you busted your balls getting the site set up right and putting fantastic ground breaking content on it then join the rest of us here in BHW and have a beer.
The truth is if you dont actively market your site/company very few will ever notice it, despite what the SE "gurus" tell you.
So how do you go about this? Well 1st is put good quality unique content on this site, if you cant write well or are too lazy outsource. There are SEVERAL fantastic writes here on BHW more than willing to give you a nice 500 word readable article for around $5.
Next I would take a look at Ubertoolz, they have the best suite of services in regards to creating and spinning content. It will blow your mind. You will need good looking spun content to go to article directories, private blogs and web 2.0's, with Ubertoolz you will ALWAYS have that.
Finally start building good quality links to your site and add links to your links.
Royalmice has a nice service here that is inexpensive and he is super fast, the links are very diverse and balanced. His service is a steal.
Insurgo has a gig on fiverr and he is a member here on BHW, he will post spun articles on blogs with PR 1-3 for a whopping $5 bucks. Last time I used him he gave me 30 links instead of the 15 he advertised.
BTB has a link push service that everyone raves about, go check him out.
For higher end services Cash202 has an amazing offering of high quality and extremely diverse linkbuilding campaign, from filesharing links to video links to all your standard web 2.0/bookmarking links etc..
I could go on and on but just remember to test your results, I usually give my sites about a week or 2 to see what they are going to do.
Start with your foundation (your site) and if you think it is ready for the attention look into the services here and read the comments, pick based on your budget and what you want to accomplish.
