What are the benefits of a top level domain name? Does it affect ranking on search engines? Has anyone of you ever used blogspot to promote affiliate products and so on :)

You can do that. promote via blogspot, it may get flagged out as spam though. Domains are easier because they develop authority as you build them. Go with a .com/.net/.org

Proper content and linking to authority sites count high right now. As always, content is King!!
Don't get lazy - use the "Search" bar located in the upper left corner. Spend 2 hours searching for your answers, then the next 2 hours doing what you just learned. Soon you will have your PhD in BHW.

Exactly. I did forget to mention that content is king. Unique content, steady content, diverse backlinks. The whole deal. + Rep for this.

    M0resleep,

If you are talking benefits of a TLD in terms of a blogspot blog, it can help make the site look more professional. If you can find an exact match domain for a keyword you are targeting this can also give you a bump in the SERP's (assuming you have a quality website).

If you are promoting affiliate products, you may want to consider moving to a self hosted Wordpress setup instead of blogspot. You will have a lot more control over the site and freedom to promote whatever you want as opposed to having it on Google's platform where they could decide for you what is ok and what is not ok to promote.

More on setting up a wordpress site,

    Hope that helps,

The top level domain name does not affect rankings, this is official.
But I agree with the previous post, having a separate wordpress website will give you more opportunities than blogspot. Not only because it is useful and simple, but because yes, having your own domain.com will look more serious, professional and trustworthy. To sell something you need to have trust. And I believe it is easier and faster to gain trust on a separate wordpress site.
