A blog by itself does not mean a whole lot.

However, by blog, you are probably thinking of something which is regularly updated and well structured (by date/category etc)

This is the reason Googles likes blogs. They are normally well structured with great internal linking. They are normally regularly updated which means a lot of fresh up to date content for Google.

They also have RSS feeds which are great for use with the many RSS feed aggregators.

Wordpress has in built pinging so search engines are pinged as soon as you post meaning they are more likely to spot your new content.

Blogs with comments also allow good interaction with users.

Using a blog will increase interaction, traffic and can have an effect on page rank. Blogs are great for targetting long tail keywords related to your niche.

If you link from your blog to your main page then your main page will be affected by a successful blog.

I have a site that google wouldn't show in there results for keywords that it should have, as the keywords aren't popular. It was this way for about a year.

I added a wp blog to it and made 1 post, 3 days later the site was and still is showing up on page 1 or 2 for the keywords.

website will look great to a search engine if it has a blog integrated in it which is updated daily, solving the problem of fresh content for your website.

The main benefit is that you always get fresh content which is great for the search engines. Other benefits include internal linking opportunities and the opportunity to mess around with a number of keywords to see how much traffic they're worth.. (if they start getting some good traffic you can always 301 it and make a better page.)

Having lots of similar content i.e. articles on choosing car insurance, history of car insurance, a list of car insurance providers etc on a car insurance site would all be very helpful to the search engines to establish what your site is about rather than just having a 5 page affiliate site.

A blog also gives you more opportunity to create linkbait, build relationships with other bloggers (i.e. linkers) etc.

I try and create a 'blog' for every site I launch for these reasons and many more.. it's worth it even if you just spin content... depending on the site however, I tend not to call it a 'blog' as it sounds bit amateur if I'm pretending to be a major ecommerce site or something.. media, information, articles etc all sounds a lot better.

    Hope that helps.

A 'News' section always works well.

If you don't like the look of a blog then make the main page a static page.
