Beginner Trying to Learn SEO in 2026 – Need Advice

Hey everyone,


I’m new to SEO and currently trying to understand the basics step by step.


Right now I’m learning about:


  • Keywords
  • Backlinks
  • On-page SEO
  • Google indexing

There’s a lot of information online, so I wanted to ask experienced members here:


  1. What should a complete beginner focus on first?
  2. Are backlinks still important in 2026?
  3. What free SEO tools do you recommend for beginners?
  4. How long did it take you to rank your first website?

I’m planning to practice by building a small test website and documenting what I learn.

Start with keyword research, content creation, and proper on-page SEO.
Backlinks still matter, but they become much more effective when your site is well optimized first.
 
From my opinion just start small and learn slowly. make a simple website, write content and see how google reacts that teaches more than watching too many tutorials.

Focus on learning the basics. If you want to write your own articles, then you have to first learn how to do that. If you just want to focus on the SEO side, focus on how you can properly research the keywords. Other stuff will come naturally as you learn. And yes backlinks are important but quality ones

You should better start from the basics. SEO is the process of optimising sites so that search engines can read and rank pages better. So, focus on ranking a site which lets you understand the process.
