    Hello BHW,

After reading through threads on this community for the past week I decided it was finally time to register. There is soooo much to learn & of course to also share with the community.

Anyway on topic, I am new to SEO and was introduced to it by a free e-book. I have a decent understanding but I am confused on certain things.

    What I have so far:
    - I've compiled a good list of sites that I can use for backlinks (via angels names on google and making a list of about 65 of those sites)
    - Experience using keyword tools from Google

    My question:
So let's say for examples sake I want to get a website to Google's 1st page. Let's say it's the page of a candy store in Boise, Idaho. The search terms I want this website to be on the 1st page of Google for are: "Candy stores in Boise", "Boise Candy shop", and "Candy in Boise".

From what I know in order to get it higher on the page rankings I should get a good amount of back links and for something like this I should only need around 15-40 back links to get page 1 (according to how I've been informed).

To my knowledge back linking is basically getting your link up on as many sites as possible. How would this help me to achieve getting said website on page #1 of google with those search terms ?

Also is back linking simply getting your links up on websites with a possible article attached?

Many thanks if you reply i'd highly appreciate it (also I chose Boise candy stores because I was just reading an article about how boise has a blue turf football field, and well... I was eating candy! So I have no intention to promote candy stores in Idaho lol)

    Real Quick:

You optimize your site and pages for the keywords you are after. In the tags, content, images, titles, etc. This tell google directly what your site is about.
Backlinks anchored with those keywords show google that other sites varify that your content and site is indeed about those keywords, and other sites are vouching for you.
If you have more and better backlinks than the other properties ranking for those keywords, that shows google that hey, this site is more popular, and had more people/sites vouching for it via linkig to it, so therefore it should be ranked higher, as this is obviously the one people will want to find in their search results for those terms.

That's SEO and backlinking in a nutshell :)

Thank you for that very informative nutshell :p

When you say 'backlinks anchored with those keywords' what do you mean by that?

The keyword is clickable..... it's not just the full url of your site or page.
