How much effort does it take to beat amazon for an obscure item like EX(self-tanning towelletes)? Will a well built sniper site outrank it with little effort?

I don't know what a "sniper site" is, but Amaz0n can be beaten in the SERPs for tons of products, especially obscure ones. They are ranking highly on the basis of their authority, not backlinks to particular product pages, so with a well optimized page and some backlinks, you should be able to outrank Amaz0n.

they've got thousands of backlinks to their product pages, but it's true most of these are internal. It's probably a bit harder to do it since it's amazon, but it should be just as hard/easy as it is with any other site with similar kind of links. Though there's probably not a lot of sites out there that are as big as amazon.

google "buy ffxiii" beating it with like no offpage seo, even though the competing amazon page has 1k+ backlinks.

With a well optimized site plus enough backlinks, amazon can be beaten.

You can also outrank an amazon product page quite easily with an amazon astore page with a properly structured URL. There was a WSO here a few weeks ago explaining how to go about that.

Try not to treat backlinks as a number game instead it is more like an art:

    1. Backlinks' source variation
Law of diminishing marginal utility applies here

    2. Percentage of quality link
You need to have massive number of link if you don't have enough quality links

    3. How does your anchor vary
    4. Where is your links placed? Inner page? Homepage? Within article body?
    The List goes on..

Yes, amazon is "beatable", but not for EVERY keyword, personal experience.

Try some longtail first, you can outrank even a .gov site with thousands of backlinks, been there done that. (on page 2)
