I have a handful of paying clients, but like anyone in SEO, I get my share of rejections or people who show interest and then won't follow up. So, just now, my wife was scheduling a spa appointment for us, and I thought, 'Hmmm...wonder if they do any SEO?' THEN I thought, 'Wonder if I could offer SEO to businesses in return for goods/services?' Like, 'I'll do SEO for your site in return for a free meal at your restaurant every week.' Meanwhile, I wouldn't go crazy, maybe build a few backlinks and social bookmarks for them here and there. It seems like a way to still get paid by people who wouldn't otherwise pay for SEO. I believe our ancestors called this concept 'bartering'.

This concept definitely works, but in business you need to figure out how you are going to get money out of it? Are you going to sell their services to someone else? Or is this just a way to make their services cheaper for you?

I barter all the time. Last year I bartered a week stay at a high end villa in St Lucia. Brought 8 of my friends down for the week. I've also bartered for a BMW from a car dealership that needed marketing. The only issue is if you barter for something that is high end you better know what you are doing. If we are talking about free dinners and pedicures, not so much a big deal.

Barter? If you are really interested of these products/goods/services, why not?
But if not, better work for money.

Do not fall into the trap of barter exchange - just know your price.

Jstover, you had me at BMW. So, is/was this on something like a rental basis, or were they willing to treat it as cash toward payment. I respect that some members here don't like the idea, but it sounds to me like a decent way of even getting into some pretty cool situations that would otherwise be impossible. I mean, if the dealer would not be willing to pay, say, $1xxx/mo for SEO, but would be willing to play ball with a decent car in lieu, there is no way I'd turn him/her down.
I'm intrigued, so how did you go about setting up this deal? Did you know these people or did you just walk onto the lot, hand over a card, and say 'I've got two, equally amazing propositions for you that will increase your ROI.'?

Could I ask why? I see it in terms of game theory: where there was once an unwilling party who represented 0 present/future value, who is now providing value. In legal terms, there is real consideration here, which I understand as worthwhile.

Well I had already had a relationship with them and was showing them a great roi. I was talking to the owner one day (we actually became really good friends) and I had mentioned that I wanted to get a new car. He asked what I was looking for and he had it shipped in. I flew to Tennessee signed the papers and drove it home.

We signed a basic agreement that I would pay off the balance with what they paid me on all monthly basis. Win win for both side. Funny thing is we are now best friends and partners in multiple businesses.

Check out the place I bartered for last year (www.stlucia.cc) Spent week there in return for marketing. Going back this year too;)

Thanks for following up...for a second, I wondered if I was either crazy or a genius; your success with this method shows that I'm clearly not crazy. ;-) Of course, my wife wouldn't be thrilled if all I did with SEO was barter, but I think this has some potential. brb, writing a wso.

The balcony view at the St Lucia site is crazy...wow. May I ask if you had been a guest there and then suggested the deal? I just came back from a nice vacation on Rawa island; perhaps I should have suggested a similar deal.

Obviously you can't just run a business on bartering, but if you are making plenty of money, it doesn't hurt to ask here and there if the client has something you want.

As far as the St Lucia deal, they offered it to me, and seeing that I love to travel, I accepted it. Since we had such a great time, I decided to do the same deal this year:)

This can be done from time to time, but don't rely on this. After all u need cash to survive :)
