I'm on the same page as GiftGuru. Getting followERS is something your account doesn't do, it's something that gets done to your account. It requires no login, etc.
Also, even if they're fakest, worst spammers ever... that doesn't benefit your account in any way (in Twitters' eyes. I do get the appeal of social proof).
I have a lot of friends who bought fake followers from the cruddiest "egg" account providers on fiverr, and nothing ever happened. (That said, all the rest of their Twitter account activity was totally benign. No @ spam, not affiliate links.) If you know of a horror story of somebody that got suspended after getting fake followers, please press them about what else they were doing with their account. There are likely a lot of of other variables.
Also, there are some "innocents" with lots of fake followers. I've seen many people fake-bomb their buddies as a joke. (People who aren't even "in the game," it's just that widespread now.)
Though it's beyond the scope of this thread, the fake followers game is a changing one. More and more people are "on to it." There are easy tools one can use to sniff out fake followers. (I'm not linking here. Google with a filter for the past month will net you the newest stuff.)
