So I found a domain for sale with loads of backlinks and 252 .edu ones. The thing is that all backlinks are spam and the domain is out of the index in the big 3. Will it be hard to get it back in the index? Will all those backlinks count if I get it back in? Or shall I just try and see?

I think that once you clean the site up, you can request that the ban be lifted. I found an article that covers it.
That being said, I think I'd skip the domain unless I could get it cheap just incase I couldn't get it unbanned.

If some of those 252 .edu are sending a fair amount of traffic then i'd say yes. G0091e is not the only traffic source.
