I'm looking to start another amazon affiliate site but I have a competitor who has some really long ass posts (upto 10k words) but all he has 4 backlinks that too from spam chinese sites, if I write 1k word articles and build some strong backlinks, would I be able to beat him?

It would be nearly impossible for us to give you a concrete answer as there more factors that go into SEO besides just backlinks and content.

In my experience I would say if you had a good balance of content and backlinks you should be able to outrank a site with lots of content but barely any backlinks.

Still waiting for someone to pull case study

huge content vs regular content and link building. Same niche, same date.

There are not many ppl capable of doing this tho.

i can call @WebMinati cuz he is pulling huge experiments.

You´re giving backlinks way too much credit or underestimating your competitor´s article. You need to find a balance between the two.

Personally, I would focus on improving your competitor´s article and this doesn´t necessarily mean making it as big or even bigger than 10k words. You can definitely make a better version of that article using fewer words, for example, adding more graphical elements like infographics and videos.

But I would focus on making it at least 5k words and heavily focus on making it more informative, reader-friendly and eye-catching.

Once you have the article ready I would make sure it is as optimized as possible. I would focus on every single on-page factor I can think of and tweak it as far as I can take SEO.

Then and only then, I would focus on building some solid, high-quality and relevant backlinks to it.

If you do this, it would be really hard for you NOT to outrank him!

Thats why i summon WebMinati, dude has balls. And since he is heavily in the business he can rank both sites with no issue after the test has passed and make $$ out of it.

I think you can, but you wont rank as muck keywords as he is. Like everyone else said it will just be better to do both. better content and better backlinks with stellar on-page seo and destroy him .Go with all you got

Yes the content is good quality , table of content, comparison table or anything he could was added. However the 10k word content is on his homepage and he has 5 such articles on his website. There aren't many posts over there

I think there has always been one winner and he'll continue to win in the forseeable future... that's backlinks.

I'm always supporting backlinks but there are tons of factors to take in count.

But I think (IMO) you cant outrank a 10k article + shitty backlinks with a 1k article.

I always go with a mix of these two, like a balance.

Thanks. But I have tried this a few times and failed miserably.

Checking intent of the keyword is important before writing an article. If you only want to rank for a few keywords which that article is ranking for @Alexbru then 1000 word article can work good (if you are in a niche where authority is not recommended by google but long tails are)

Like in few of my niches long tail keywords are dead. Authority sites win the game with their shitty articles (health sites)

    Backlinks vs content?

Backlinks wins Everytime sadly, who says otherwise is either lying(guru) or is not making good money (3k or less per month) (it's like avg income in US)

Long form content don't get you links:
Stats, talking about celebs, maps, tools and shit like that get you links (somewhat organically but difficult af)

Your content has to convert people so it has to be good, and it should be good enough to point backlinks to (else someone will just report you).

A lot of people report sites to Google, they won't stop! So you have to be good in order to keep ranking. Good content will do that for you too!

I am doing anchor ratio experiment on my personal sites. I don't believe in single variable testings but I believe every keyword is different and should be treated differently.
I can't just say that 30% exact is natural in casino coz it was in marketing niche. So stuff depends on a lot of factors, that's why I love SEO :p

This is very good advice :)

You are putting a lot of pressure on me :l but I am honored :) Thank you so much.

    First suggestion:
Do not reveal the keyword to @WebMinati or he will outrank you and your competitor for the same price
    Second suggestion:
Why don't you test with a parasite and a few backlinks?

Seems that you've got a nice prey.
Make the most out of it!

google definitely would favour his as engagement level is higher and he will get some natural links also when they stay top of the page. But you could give a try who exactly knows that.

If he only has 4 spammy backlinks, my first thought is that there could be something we're not seeing? Maybe a PBN or a redirect? On my own site, which is all I can speak to with any level of authority, I have a couple thousand backlinks and a decent authority rank for my company and it's size. The keywords I was targetting did not do so well. Once I started putting up better content (thank you BHW for teaching me this), I started getting regular traffic to my site and it's articles. These articles are ranking #1 on several variations of their keywords. The higher CTR has helped the ranking of the keywords I'm really focused on though. Before my site would be on page 3 of Google or further and now it's the bottom of page 1 or the top of page 2 for those keywords and the only sites above mine are nationwide companies and big name portals that dominate the industry. For Bing (via duck duck go), I actually rank #5 which is pretty cool.

In my experience, which is admittedly very limited, it's a mix of content and links but links alone won't get you there without quality traffic.

For what it's worth, my articles average between 1,500 and 2,000 words. Some as low as 600. Only a couple pictures, nothing crazy but broken up so it's easy to read. Table of contents and planned out content. Just enough to cover the topic without fluff.

    Parasite testing is awesome :D

I have ranked a lot of articles on medium, Reddit which generate some money on daily basis. So this advice is #1
