Is anyone here working with Banking as a Service (BaaS) to reduce time to market and avoid the lengthy process of obtaining financial licenses? I’m exploring its potential benefits and would love to hear experiences from anyone who’s partnered with BaaS providers. Specifically interested in how it's streamlined operations and facilitated quicker launches. Let’s discuss.

Thanks ,

Financial licensing as in? To obtain a bank account you need to provide your (or your company’s/trust’s) kyc documentation. It takes a day to process, most of the times.

Are you looking for some money laundering scheme? Or may be you want to be a bank? Please explain.

Hello,

No, it’s not about evading regulations! Banking as a Service lets businesses offer banking services quickly without waiting for licenses because the provider already has them in place. It’s all about optimization, and as long as there’s no law saying otherwise, it’s perfectly legal!

I’m exploring the use of white-label structures and fully understand the need for KYC and KYB compliance, as required for any company operating in finance. I’ve identified a region with potential for leveraging these structures and would like to gather feedback on the possibilities and considerations.

I have done some development for a micro banking company, I have used https://www.solarisgroup.com/en/ it's pricey, and you don't need to worry about the e-money liscence which cost around £1 million in the UK, instead using their services you kind of trade under their umbrella. Hope that helps.

I see what you mean. Man that is tough atleast in my country (India). We have a few companies (less than 10) who got the license to operate as a bank. Pretty sure it would have costed them a fortune just to be considered. I hope you get a solution that is cheap. Please tag me here if you manage to get something like this. I would love to know too.

I’ve been in discussions with Solaris for a price quote, but so far, the initial meetings have been fairly generic. I haven't received the final quote yet. I know some neo-banks in the EU that work with Solaris, as they’re well-known for their banking infrastructure in Europe.
But Im focus now in other regions Aparts Europe .

I’ve found the providers, but I’m looking for feedback from anyone who has gone through something similar

That's correct, I would really suggest them for a startup, they are excellent and very well documented, I would still suggest to upgrade to a neo-bank in the future, I think their price is a bit high.

The issue with the mid- to long-term outlook in the EU is that growth can become stagnant. While you can apply for an FCA license, VASP, EMI, or even buy a pre-established company with those licenses, the costs are significantly higher compared to regions like LATAM. Additionally, in Europe, you often have to target each country individually.
Can you name a country in the EU with a population of 200 million? There are already many established players in the European market.

It depends on what your business plan is, there is always an audience to cover.

Depends what sort of niche industry you onboard. Something where I see the lack of this type of service is on "freelancers" accounts. Many people struggle with receiving money made on sites like fiverr or pph or Upwork or freelancer.com or toptal and much more...

Maybe a banking service for freelancers could work. You will get tons of Indians registered but you will make a fee from every transaction.

This is what Payoneer, Wise, Etc are doing too they all use BAAS since it is not possible for them to individually give coverage to so many countries with their one EMI license

Exactly

Guys, the comparison of top EMI providers isn’t always straightforward since EMIs utilize banks’ APIs.

Enumerating large overseas companies doesn’t make much sense, considering the complex processes involved, such as regulations, monopolies, and approval from central bank regulators. BaaS, you don’t need a bank license to provide solutions; you don’t have to be a bank specifically, i mean there is manny Crap PSP providing also the structure for a cut .

I’m exploring a country where 75% of companies are owned by micro-entrepreneurs, which is quite remarkable. The ease with which natives can start a business is impressive, but it also presents its own challenges.

Do you understand that if you are planning to do what I think you are planning, you will need a good marketing budget...?

The company I build a banking app for was based in central London, Canary wharf. They had a budget of £250,000 just for marketing... Guess what, they didn't make it.

They onboarded only 10,000+ people, but only few were making large deposits and transactions, they closed after 6 months selling their clients to revolut...

Also most of their clients onboarded because crypto was being gifted in exchange for signing up.

Yes, I completely understand. My frustration lies with the EU or UK, where early returns are often poor or nonexistent. $250k for just 10k clients is concerning, especially when you consider the CPC and client maintenance costs.
I also believe the team may have taken a portion of the marketing fund—hahaha! Since BaaS has a monthly cost structure based on the provider, it’s definitely something to keep in mind.
Anyway, I appreciate you sharing your insights, especially given your experience in the market.
Thank you!

So you want to get services from a BaaS provider, use their API and provide services -!called: Neobank?

Even if it sounds easy, yes firms like:
- Quonto (Treezor, Uk)
- FINOM (solaris)
- Vivid (Solaris)
- n26 - already bank licensed
- bunq - already bank licensed

Do you have an overview about the costs that come up with those kind of business models?
Not only to gain reputation with proper marketing, but there are many other factors as well.:

- Well obviously the API which will cost you like 5-15k , let’s assume 10.000€ depending on agreement & forecasts, business cases and personal liquidity / liability
- transaction costs could be around 0,10€ to 0,40€, let’s take 0,20€ -> but definitely not less.
- integration of the API in your IT landscape could go up to 30.000€, but let’s go for lowball 10,000€
- compliance, anti money laundering & kyc-> setting it up (without maintainance and regulatory updates since the field is evolving) could be like 5000€
-
Hosting and Infrastructure: 1000€ I would say, let’s take 5000€ - incl a bit of maintenance
- legal consulting etc, only initial costs: 3000€ I would assume - but this is just for starter

- Some personal resources, even if you are digital: 10.000€

Let’s assume all costs are the same - only your transactions, thus earnings increasing - but also the transaction costs:

Case 1:
500 customers
Total revenue before taxes = minus 28,500€

Case 2:
2000 customers
Total revenue before taxes = minus 22,000€

Case 2:
10000 customers
Total revenue before taxes = minus 3,000€

More close to BE.

I’ll switch to PC thus I post again

Lol, I do agree, I saw few people from one day to another with a new car... And pricey watches, the development team doesn't have access to budget unfortunately, only marketing team, they can spend on whatever tools, ads and services they wish. I think they are the ones who Bank(rupted) the startup

Can you name a country in the EU with a population of 200 million? There are already many established players in the European market.

Exactly! And many get declined, fail & will never succeed; being realistic is essential in this game.

Not really, there are many providers for Freelancers:
- Revolut (personally used for freelancing)
- N26 (personally used for freelancing)
- BUNQ (personally used for freelancing)
- VIVID (should be quite good, no experience)
- QUNTO (applied, but dont followed to final sign-up because I was a bit annoyed by their customer service)
- FINOM, by Solaris (personally using mainly for 2 companies - they also provide services for freelancers)

Well, let's go back to OP's point, things that have NOT been considered in this mini calculation:

- Since we had fixed costs in the example above, with more customers - more personal ressources or scaling IT are needed
- What is your CAC (Costs of Acquisition): Lowball to compete: 100€ / per customer
- Branding and PR: Lowball, 10.000€
- Scalability of the Infrastructure and Cloud: Could jump from 10.000€ to 20.000€ - 25.000€
- Insurances: Easy peasy 10.000€ (by the way. the costs are yearly)
- IT Security / Databank protection: Lowball: 10.000€
- Well,
Banks need a Liquidity buffer, but you still need it as well - you can't just step into the Market and not have any financial Resources for unforeseen things:
Lowball: 100.000€

Total Investment: Lowball (!): 500.000€ each year; assuming that you should survive without getting bankrupt for like 2-3 years: Faktor 2 / 3

Those are even the very high costs of this business model, not even considering things like tax consultancy, ensuring PSD2, data breaches, bug fixing, lawsuits, etc.

Without Investors, proper knowledge of Management, and mainly from IT & Banking, it is not feasible.
At least nothing that realistically is achievable for anyone here on BHW.

That isn't meant to be rude; it's a realistic opinion.
Just think that you are providing Banking Services - First, you need to build a reputation.
But even though you don't need a banking license for this, some services might be available. - You could avoid them, but I'm unsure which ones they were.

In case you tackle this, let us / me know :-)

Best,

Thank you for your collaboration and your strong knowledge of the EU structure. However, I would suggest avoiding the EU market due to the many factors you mentioned. The cac, cpc, or similar metrics won’t be the same if we operate in other regions.

I'm now focusing more on the LATAM market for many reasons that simply aren’t available in the EU. I’ve had meetings with companies regulated by the central bank (similar to EMIs in the EU) that offer the full structure.

I understand your point might sound impractical or unfeasible, but consider this: I’m also from the EU and have now moved to a LATAM country. It’s the same language, but with EUR backing. The quotes I’ve received from BaaS providers in the LATAM market are far more manageable if you have the initial capital, which is significantly lower than in Europe.
