Okay so during my keyword research i discovered that the top three sites ranking for the keyword i will target are inner pages adn only have 5 links to them, however the domain has hundreds. Does teh amount of links to the domain play a big role in ranking or should i easily be able to outrank them? THanks

Yes, but that´s not the only factor you should look for, there are many factors that define a ranking on google. Grab market samurai for free in here and do a "seo competition" search for the keywords you are targetting.

Usually, if the pages have a little amount of direct backlinks it could mean light competition. It´ll depend on many factors such as domain age, PR, if the pages have the keywords in url, in header, desc and meta tags, etc. This you pointed out is a good indicative of weak competition, but I´d have to take a deeper look into it to be sure. THese 5 backlinks could be strong stuff, maybe they´re fully optimized for it, or maybe google has just not found anything better to rank there. Lots of variants possible, do the seo competition analysis and you´ll see for yourself.

    Nice observation skills there btw.

The top sites do seem to be going after the keyword however there links are very weak and most don't even use anchor text to target the keyword. The sites do use it in their title tages, however some seem to be missing it in their h1 or h2 tags. I think with a couple web 2.0 like hubpages ezine, blogspot, wordpress, or other links i should be able to overtake. HOwever the one thing that may make it harder is that my website is on a brand new domain so i may have to gather a couple more backlinks than i normally would have. Sorry for these nooby questions. Thanks for your help
