Hi

When I check some of my competitors backlinks

I see that they have their links on websites that are foriegn (non English language).

Such as French Dutch etc.

Why is this?

Wouldn't Google regonise this link as spam or see it as unauthentic?

Why should google recognise them as spam? I am from Greece and most legit websites here link out to foreign (English mostly) websites.

Because they might think that the majority of people will not be able to read this language, they are just using this website to rank. ??

That would make more sense if english websites linked out to greek ones for example. But almost everyone can understand english and most information is written in english. So it makes sense for english websites to receive links from all around the world. I would bet without even seeing its backlink profile that CNN has links from every language possible.

If you have some good understanding of dutch, and other language, you can get some really good publishing there which will offer you some natural backlinks as well. The benefit with the foreign sites is that some of them are not so spammed and have high PR, and easy to get.

It depends a lot if you have a huge website with thousand of related domains pointing to your website or if it's just a small business domain. Huge authority websites regularly get backlinks from non English websites...

Those link may be from link networks like russian link networks. They are bad in google eye keep building good links you will see boost in your sites.
