So I've got a question about backlinks and their anchor text. Basically, what's better to rank for a specific keyword. Having 10k backlinks pointing to your site with a name as the anchor text (for example "John Smith") or having 1k (or even less) backlinks pointing to your site with the keyword as the anchor text?

I've been building tons of backlinks to my sites mainly with names as the anchor text, but not really seeing movement in the SERPS for my keyword. Maybe I should bite the bullet and risk having the links removed in order to get a few backlinks with the keyworded anchor text?

Any information would be helpful. Thanks! :D

just my personal limited experience, but it seems like spamming tons of BS links with generic anchor text doesn't really help very much unless there also exist some good links with your desired keywords in the anchor text. massive inbound links demonstrate that your site seems to be popular, but it's the anchor text which tells the SE's why your site is popular.

You have to give the SE something to index you by. An Anchor text in your backlink is one of the best ways to do that. If your posting a lot of backlinks with John Smith as your anchor then you'll end up indexed for that name, not your keyword.

The best backlink you can make is on a page that is totally relevant to your keywords, leave a relevant comment with your keyword and use a relevant keyword anchor. That totally lets the SE know your link is related to the keyword.

If your making posts on pages that are totally relevant to your keywords, leave a relevant comment with your keyword and use an irrelevant anchor like John Smith then the SE will still have info from the page and comment.

If you make posts on pages that are totally relevant to your keywords, leave an irrelevant comment and use an irrelevant anchor like John Smith then the SE will still have info related to your keyword from the page.

If you make posts on pages that are totally irrelevant to your keywords, leave a relevant comment with your keyword and use a relevant anchor then the SE will have some keyword info from the comment and anchor.

A post made on a page that's totally irrelevant to your keywords, has an irrelevant comment, and uses an irrelevant anchor then the SE won't have any keyword info to index your link.

If you have good onsite keyword SEO then even the irrelevant links can help some, but only if there are also a lot of relevant links out there too. You need to have some keyword relevance in at least one position, either the page content, the comment content, or the anchor text. Better to have relevance in two postitions and best if you can have all three.

That's some awesome responses. Thanks for your replies and I guess I'll start using my keyword as the anchor text, but a lot of people sometimes think it's spam even if I do leave a relevant comment.

I guess I'll just have to take quality over quantity now, which seems to be what the SE's want.

social networks are playing a huge role in Search engine marketing.. anchor text of profiles names are posting with 10k in a day like "john smith" with containing the link of john's profile... are you thinking to build more links then twitter and digg per day ??? please use some keyword also with your name to see the result like "john smith SEO" that will help you a lot and motivate you too.

do not have the names as the backlinks.I mean do not give the majority of backlinks name as the anchor text.Make sure at least 50 percent of links have the keyword phrase[or its variation] as the anchor text. What i do is make sure that i drop the exact keyword phrase in domains that have high trust or in the high PR pages.I also make sure to drop the exact phrase in domains that are older or have dmoz listing.Hope you are using seo quake addon in firefox.
