Backlinks to specific pages on expired domain I just bought. Should I remake some of them?

Or does it not matter at all? The pages the backlinks are coming into my site to are gone since the domain was expired and now i've taken it over and put my own stuff on it.

So my question is, is there any benefit to the links actually following through to real pages or is the default wordpress "Oops! That page can’t be found" just as good?

    You have a few choices:

Redirect those pages to a different page that DOES exist. This loses a little juice but is safe.

Bother building out all those pages and try to rank them for whatever keyword they used to work for.

Let them go to a 404 page, but in your 404 page all a link to whatever page you want to flow link juice to. This is a nice little dirty trick that redirects a lot of many dead pages' juice to any location on the site you like. It wastes a lot, but allows you to aim it with precision.

No, it's nearly worthless to send backlinks to 404 pages! At the very least you need to 301 redirect them to an actual page/article on your website.

I disagree. Having a link on your 404 page directs a portion of all the dead pages link juice to wherever you link to. This is a good fit for those who have MANY dead pages with just a few links. Search Engine Land wrote about this "exploit" I believe.

You could redirect to homepage or recreate that page if you think its worth it.

The wordpress 404 page already has links. All the regular links the entire site has, the menus, footer, sidebar, header, etc. What would be different about making a custom 404 page with another link in it?

is there already a basic way of redirecting those links that you guys use or would you just use something like this

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/redirection/

The difference would be that a 404 page with just one link directs 100% of the link juice it has (which isn't 100% of the other pages value, but a fraction of the combined value) to the single destination of your choosing. I'm not saying 'do this' but it is a possibility depending on your goals and the number of dead pages you have to deal with and IF there is a single page you want to boost. I've done this to the 'Shop' page of sites I've had that were niche before because I wanted the shop page to rank as strong as possible. This is in opposition to individually redirecting the pages to various pages is good if your existing site has pages ON those dead pages various topics.

The links I'm trying to rebuild have stop words and underscores and end in .html are _ underscores on majestic the same as - dashes on chrome? Is the .html something i should be concerned with?

Under scores and dashes are different. But they serve the same purposes. The .html is no different than some sites that use .java or .jar or .whatever.... Its a programming thing, but if your current site doesn't use that its a problem.

How good are the links pointing at internal pages?

Inner pages need love too, me friend. It just depends on your strategy.

I'm just using wordpress. It automatically converts _ to - and removes the stop words but the stop words im pretty sure i can fix but still dont know about the .html or the underscores.

alot are pointing to the main site, but some of the biggest, at least 3 or 4 with higher TF than CF like 25/15, 17/10, 8/7 pointing to those .html pages.

Trump has the last word. Jokes apart, 404 redirects, with a link pointing to a particular page does seem to offer more benefits for you.

Got it. Uploaded the .html file right into bluehost file manager in my domains folder. Now have to figure out how to 301 redirect it
