Backlinks no longer valid - why is G00ogle still giving site juice?

Okay, so a competitor site recently jumped me in the SERPs out of no where - and has been holding this spot for at least a month.

I found out his blog used to be part of a huge blog network (probably as a subdomain) where every other blog had a sidebar of links to the other blogs on the network.

Now that he's got his own domain name and changed to a standalone self-hosted wordpress blog, G00gle is still showing all of those old links (nearly 15,000 relevant backlinks) when i do a "link:hxxp://domaindotcom" search.

Is this just because G hasn't indexed all of those backlinks to find that the links no longer exist? I suppose I risk actually improving his current positioning on the good links though. (Do people still "bomb" sites to drop competitor rankings?)

If I start indexing his backlinks using some service, is it possible he'll lose positioning?

    Maybe he has 301'd it.

You can only bomb new sites, sites with aged links and good ranking wont hurt them.
