If a website is pointing to my site using a a text link, then it count as a backlink, with the anchor text being considered by google for SERP.

Now if a website is pointing to my site using an image such as a "Download Now" button, does it count as a backlink? also, if it does, what else will be considered by google considering there isn't any anchor text?

I know image links do count but I'm not sure how powerful they are. If you can set the image alt and title tags (I find Filename helps too) make them your keyword.

Image links do count, and they are quite important and adds to link diversity. Today SEO experts are buying banner ads (of the size of 120 X 30), not for traffic but for SEO purpose.

Yes, image links do count. Depending on your niche, competition and how well you optimize, you can also rank well in G++gle Images.
