Backlinking using URL shortener

Hi everyone, recently I noticed some sites trying to create backlinks to their site with bit.ly and rebrandly.

I believe this is to prevent competitors from finding their backlinks.

But does google pick these up as backlinks? Ie. would link juice be passed?

Yes juice is passed

Some people use them to filter automated links, acts as a filter

Yup and its easy to disavow them in case of emergency, you just need to keep track of links.

You should always check if the shortened link has a 301-type redirect. The good thing is that majority of link shortners use it, so your SEO power is safe and will pass to you.
