On a lot of my sites I'll post many inner pages with good content that has to do with the wider niche, but they're not pages I care about ranking.

I usually only want my homepage and one or two inner pages ranking, everything else is just there so my site isn't redflagged as thin affiliate site and so I gain authority in the niche. These extra pages do bring in some traffic and it's semi-targeted.

My main issue is that I still want a balanced link profile for my site, offsite and on. Doesn't look great if it's my homepage and a couple inner's that have all the links. But I post new articles daily to a lot of these sites, and getting most these pages backlinks is a pain. Right now I do a mix, I backlink some, but even with that, I wonder how much good it does. It could even be risky if some of those links get me Penguin'd.

I figure a number of you must add extra content just to beef up your sites, content that's not targeting your specific keyword(s), but maybe the wider niche... so how do you handle backlinking it?

Thats a good question. I've been backlinking most of my pages as well. I also would like to know if it helps towards SEO ranking.

do we have to build links to page 2,3,4,5 etc as well? I'm thinking on doing that too as I saw other sites have PR for them too.

my opinion is that the penguin/panda updates kind of have you scared. i have a website that i update 30-40 times a day, and I may do some aggressive building to 3 or 4 pages. Then some of them i nofollow. So don't you think it's natural that some webpages have WAY more links than the others? You think natural looks like each webpage obtaining 1k links, or close to it? You'll be ok.

ive aeen quite a few ranking sites that have pages on their sites with no or very little links. i thinks that is natural, to have lots of links to every single page on your site may itself look unnatural

You don't think its more natural with popular websites to have multiple backlinks to all of the pages on their site. I'd think that's more normal. If traffic regularly visited a site, most of the pages would be viewed, and blogging/social bookmarking/backlinking would be done. I'm wondering if anyone has tested this theory against the Big G.

I think it "CAN" help. It will look more natural when you do it. I put emphasis at the word CAN in here because, nobody knows if it will really shoot up your rankings. One important tip though, when you perform a backlink campaign to your inner page, be sure to put a link to your target/landing/homepage from that inner page. So it acts like a 2nd tier link going to your main page.

    I hope it makes sense.

I don't think so. Google is more aggressive every day and natural websites have backlinks to internal pages.
