Basically, ive set up a site with roughly 5400 monthly usa searches this week and have set up a wordpress blog and added content and plugins etc..

Ive also submitted the site to google, pinged it and submitted to 50 social bookmarking sites..

What i want to know is when should i begin building backlinks and how much backlinks per day?

Im looking to outsource all of my SEO work, so i'd probably just get the backlinks from a service provider on bhw, but theres soo many different services - profile links, edu links, normal backlinks etc..

Whats the best for new sites?

    Thanks in advance :)

PS: Im new to SEO so be gentle :)

You've got a lot of learning to do...in my opinion. The only way to learn is to try and fail. As a general rule you'll want to get your back links from different sources and types, sites with high PR, and sites that haven't been spammed to death

I see, i guess trial and error it is..

I see a lot of people mentioning article submissions, web 2.0 and stuff, is that stuff NEEDED or is it just for more traffic?

When you start building links just stay consistent. As the site gets older increase the amount naturally and you'll be ok.

The best way is testing, you'll learn a lot by trying a variety of links out. Heck, you can even get your feet wet by buying smaller link packages of just about the same type of links on Fiverr and test your experiences.

Would you wear a same tee shirt everyday? Ofcourse not!

The same goes with the SEO case. You need to try out different things and different mediums in order to gain backlinks. You should use web 2.0 sites, article directories, social bookmarking, blog commenting, profile links and etc in order to get backlinks and see fast, if not immediate results.

There are some really good threads here by BHW members, just browse through them and I am sure that you will learn a lot more about SEO. Best of all, everything has been done for you by other fellow members, you just need to execute.

If you are buying backlinks, cheapest is not always the best way to go.
    Quality over quantity is better.

I see SEO and backlink building more of an art rather than a science.
It's all about being "creative" and using the right side of your brain.

5400 searches p/m is WAY WAY too competitive especially if your new in this biz. Those are for EXACT match keywords arent they? I bet any money that there are sites out there who are ranking with lots of competition on your side. Expect to rank in 8 months if you start now.

Keep building links on daily basis from different sources and types. You can start with building 5 links every day using forum posts and profiles on Monday, submitting articles on Tuesday, blogs commenting on Wednesday, creating web2.0 pages on Thursday, social bookmarking Friday..... be consistent and grow your back links consistently. Later on you can buy links on high PR blogs using paid to blog networks. There are lot of other ways by which you can build links but i suggest you to make a schedule and stick to it. You can learn other ways later on as you will be knowing what works for you.

    Yeah, exact searches..

Im not too sure on that to be honest, i've wrote some unique articles, and did social bookmarking to the site, and using the EMD i'm currently on 3rd page of google with 0 backlinks, so i reckon with some backlinks and more articles i could get to page 1 pretty quickly..

The top sites on page 1 only have at maximum of 150 backlinks for the page..

I dont know weather im just being stupid and naive but it seems as though I can rank for it?

Go for it! 5,400 EMS is a decent amount of competition but not enough to not get on page one and even the top half of page one.

Don't give up just yet, but do expect a long uphill battle.

I would probably wait till you know what you're doing before you start outsourcing.

I tried outsourcing one of my first projects and wasted a PILE of money expecting that outsources would know how to build the right kinds of links . . . boy was I wrong.

Chose a low-competition keyword so you can see quick results in the rankings and try building links yourself . . . then, once you learn a way that works for you, you'll be able to outsource your exact process.

Ah, i tried to outsource already lol.. bought some edu profile backlinks from bhw..

Looking at my rankings, ive moved onto page 1 position 8 but when i go to check the backlinks on my site it only says 1 backlink, does this mean i've got onto page 1 without the backlinks coming into play yet?

You can't know. Ultimately you can't really know what backlinks have or have not been indexed yet, the backlink checkers aren't even close to 100 percent accurate. After the first few weeks that a new site goes online you can directly measure when you add links and the site rises.

I guess over the next few weeks i'll find out how it goes. SEO is a slow old game isnt it lol..

This could be a good little case study to actually see the so called effects of backlinking..

Personally, if google is all about delivering the most RELEVANT search results, surely having the best and unique content would win over any number of backlinks, as it does what google looks for, and that is provide a relevent search result for the user..
