It does matter because they are different URLs.

Go to your website and highlight and copy the url from the address bar. That is what you should use.

Most of mine are in this format: http://mysite.com/

I always include the backslash at the end because my url has a backslash at the end.

Redirect ur site to one URL.

and than make Backlinks to that URL.

Eg : Incase of Google , backlinks should be made to www.google.com

Because EVEN Google.com gets redirected to it.

Okay guys so, when i open my website IT DOES NOT HAVE WWW (but when you open it with www, it opens up a website WITHOUT www again)

So by that logic i was backlinking to http://website.com (without www)

So i should redirect something now(never done it ) ?

    edit
Just like you said with google
MY website is just like google, but the opposite way

You open http://www.mywebsite.com, and it opens up http://mywebsite.com

If you've always backlinked to the correct url it is not a problem.

Just in case, I always use link juice keeper (free wp plugin). It redirects all links to invalid urls to the homepage. I make mistakes and so do my outsourcers so with that plugin I don't have to worry about it.

Yeah so you backlink the NON www URL.

    i.e :http://mywebsite.com

and even change it to show NON www URL in search engine

By going to Google webmaster TOOLs, if your using it.

Just put your main url and that must be with www like this http://www.mysite.com/ using canonical tag if you want google bot to crawl your with www url and use with www for backlinks rather than without www.

You should have just one choice :)

Pick what you prefer between with or without www and redirect the one you like to the other.

Having both is duplicate content ;)

    make a .htaccess on root
    PHP:
    Options +FollowSymlinks
    RewriteEngine on
    rewritecond
    %{http_host} ^mywebsite.com [nc]
    rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.mywebsite.com/$1 [r=301,nc]
mywebsite.com will be redirect to www.mywebsite.com
invert if you want the opposite effect

but you HAVE to choose , not doing this will have a negative effect on your serp

hello and thanks for your htaccess.
in mine there is "l,r" and no "nc" in 2nd line
    like

    Code:
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mywebsite.com$ [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*) http://www.mywebsite.com/$1 [L,R=301]
what is the difference, is mine false?

it does matter.. as both are different urls altogether. Even in siteexplorer you can see different backlink count for these two urls. However it is good to build for both these as well as more number of deep-links, as that looks natural.

when you go to www.website.com , the url shown is website.com ?
then it's good in your case

website.com and www.website.com are considered by google as 2 different url , so you have to make www.website.com be redirected to website.com to avoid the duplicate content filter
