    hypothetical situation:

my site is indexed by G as http://derp.com
i create forum profiles, comment on blogs etc. as either http://www.derp.com or http://www.derp.com.

will G still recognize these as backlinks, or not?

Google can actually see these as two different sites. Even though it has gotten better at choosing the correct one building links using one version while your site is setup using a different one is not going to help.

You want to be consistent and use the same version in all your link building and in setting up your site. If you have already created a large number of links using the www then I would change your site structure to www, google will pick up the change though you can help it along if you want. If you have not done much link building yet I would just change the url to http:// without the www from now on.

There are a couple good vids on the Google webmasters channel about this subject.

alright, thanks man. it's indexed as www. and 99% of my backlinks are http://www.

suppose I should set it to treat every url as www. in webmaster tools then. thanks.

It's not necessarily to set it up in GWT, if you already have made a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file (the only good way to avoid duplicate content).

If you chose to have your site as "non-www" and you make a link with "www" then will you lose a small part of the linkjuice.

If google has my site indexed as www can I just carry on backlinks with http and google will replace it?
