So I just picked up a domain which has a backlink from an internal page of this PR9 site. The actual page the link is on is a PR3 (do follow) and its a listing of ventures by staff and students. It's a .com (pr2) dating from 2004.

Just wondering whether I will get more value by rebuilding a similar site to what was there and using it for my network, or 301 the whole domain to a site I'm trying to rank?

    Thanks

Since the actual PR of the page where you got your link is PR3 then in my opinion is there is too much effort.
The actual PR of the page count not the domain PR. Facebook is a PR9 website but if you post a link on your profile you will not get the benefit of a link on a PR9 webpage... So in my opinion is just a PR3 do-follow link, and this is not so difficult to get.

    Thank you
