Saw it on Reddit yesterday, made me laugh. This just shows that, back then, SEO was just a game of getting "votes" (amount of links) instead of authority links, web 2.0, etc. O, how times have changed.

I think its because the domain amazon.com did not have as much authority as it does now. It can be compared to a product launch.

New product comes out, main website does not have that much authority, and it basically a race to see who can rank for the product first. But sooner or later, the main website will outrank all the rest if its legit because people will be linking to it.

Its amazing what 10+ years of link building can do! Amazon ranks for such difficult keywords just through onsite seo

Back then you could outrank your competitors with traffic alone. If you spammed yahoo games and got 100,000 viewers a day, you could rank #1 because they used traffic as a ranking factor (even non-organic traffic). plus that was the period of time when all of them link trading sites were killin it lol
