    Hi,

I've been around for some time now and I have a question regarding publishing methods:

What is the difference between gray and black hat?

for example offering a cpa link with the text of: "fill this form for a free something" and not giving anything after the user fills the form considered black hat?

I wouldnt say thats BH, but I may be wrong....id consider blackhat more of iframing and stuff like that, but again, I may be wrong....What you described would be incenticized traffic, and although not right, theres nothing really Bh about it

Grey Hat is probably easiest to define after defining White Hat and Black Hat.

White Hat - You create a website that pushes a service or offer that people are genuinely interested in. For example, you create a dating website with dating profiles and then push relationship ebooks, etc. to your members. No rules are broken, everything is legitimate.

Black Hat - You promise something that no one ever gets, you push something that's not in the user's best interest and you play entirely off a person's sense of greed. I doubt oyu need an example of this.

Grey Hat -You combine the previous two. For example, Facebook groups that say "If 1 million people join this group, my dad will pay the vet to give our dog cancer treatments" yet post a links to "Doggy Training" under the group's favorite links. Pushing an offer that says "Free MOVIES!*" where the * connotes that you have to pay a $19.95 subscription fee every month for the next year.

Grey Hat is essentially a little bit of column a and a little bit of column b. White Hat rarely lies and instead tries to make a genuine living giving genuine products that people want. Black Hat wants a quick buck. Grey Hat can be a combination of the two in terms of longevity; I like to think that Grey Hats have ulterior motives while Black Hats will downright lie to you and White Hats somewhat enjoy being honest.

Thanks for that, so basically if I understand you correctly using lies is considered black hat? thus promising something the user will never get

I mainly associate blackhat with lying or dishonesty, but I suppose it'd be better to say that "doing whatever it takes" would be a better way to phrase it.

White hat, grey hat and black are really all mindsets or frames of mind. That's why they use a "hat" for a metaphor. It goes on your head because that's where the action is.

When you say white hat, you have somebody whose mindset is basically conventional. He may or may not know the rules, but he follows them implicitly and even adding a few of his own. Most of the time, he adopts somebody else's rules believing them to be true and moral.

A black hat is somebody whose mindset is basically radical. His only rules are his own and that of nature. Nobody can impose their own rules against this person without his consent. He may employ purely "white hat" methods, but that is a matter of choice and not by accident.

A grey hat is somebody whose mindset is basically that of a "fence sitter" or someone without strong beliefs of either white or black philosophies. He wants to be persuaded where to settle. He doubts the way of the "white hat", but is attracted to the success of the "black hat" way of life.

(Thinking out loud. Hmm. By my definition, it seems that I am black hat.)

I'd add spam (in every form.. email, social networks, spamming backlinks) is BH.
