So this month my Awstats reading is seriously off. It says that I only have received 600 hits this month so far. I also use analytics and its reading 5k hits so far this month which has been the norm for the past few months. I think I am going to stay with analytics, disregarding awstats all together. I also read that awstats traffic is incorrect anyway. Something about log files that are counted as if they were a real live visitor. Any truth to this? Because that seems ridiculous.

I haven't looked at awstats in some time, but the results weren't that great. You can probably identify uniques vs. hits, but this is not a very robust tracker.

If you like a js solution, check out piwik.

Awstats also tracks bots so leave it. It just give you some idea about your traffic. Analytics is good tool and free and in case you don't want to use Google try piwik...

Checked out piwik. Looks like an analytics clone. Is there any real advantage of it over analytics?

Maybe it's just me but I had a terrible time getting piwik to work with my wordpress sites. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and have used Awstats instead since it's right there in the c-panel anyway. I'll never use G's analytics again...they know enough already!
