No less than 47 threads a day are started saying in one way or another "Google Has Hurt My Site with It's Latest Update". I'm going to offer some very general information as to how to avoid that issue (it's never been one for me) and I would hope that others more knowledgeable than I chime in. OnSite SEO Don't ignore onsite SEO by any means and you can actually rank with just outstanding onsite with very little backlinks... I do it early and often (thank you Chicago Democrats for that). Proper use of <h1>, <h2>, <h3> tags as well as using the <strong> take for your KW on each page is something that you can take to the bank. Unique content of upwards of 500 words is also a must and in my research the new 500 word page is now a 700 word page. I have a hard time believing that "too much content" on a page is a bad thing. Govern yourself accordingly. Add content at random times as well... 2 articles today, 1 article tomorrow, no articles for a couple of days, 1 article after that... make it look like a regular blogger. Change up your theme on a regular basis if you are using WP... many bloggers do that and it also looks very natural. Have the same plugins for all your sites? Bad move... many plugins have alternative for your goals and use some of the alternatives. Use the same ping list for each site? Another footprint you want to avoid (thanks Dan aka Wannabie). Off Site SEO I own a couple of very successful services with some very smart people but would never suggest that you use only one of or even all of my services to rank your site. One needs to use a vast variety of backlinking processes/methods to backlink their site for long term rankings and one needs to use them in a chaotic manner. Adding links on a regular generic basis where you add 20/50/100/whatever number you come up with is a bad idea. Adding them so you have a varied number hitting your sites on a regular basis is what would appear natural to Google et. al. A variety of diverse backlinks hitting your sites at random times will keep any kind of Google Panda from affecting your sites in a negative manner. The key to winning is to make sure that what you are doing is 100% unique if at all possible when it comes to both on and off site SEO and taking each idea you have and ideas from those knowledgeable and even those that are not and backlinking in a chaotic manner and updating your site in the same chaotic fashion.
