I like the idea of thanking people for following me and referring them to my landing page, but I don't wanna pay $10-25 to do so as I would have to with Crowdfire, StatusBrew and other services. IFTTT allows me to send automated tweets to new followers and its completely free.

Yeah. For Twitter & Instagram there is Crowdfire & Statusbrew to send automated direct messages to new followers. IFTTT has a service for sending automated tweets to new followers

You have a higher ban rate sending DM's to all new followers where it's against ToS. Plus most people are smart enough to know it's fake. "Automated replies and mentions" in this article https://support.twitter.com/articles/76915#

I have crowdfire (free) sending a quick precise auto-DM to any new follower. It's basically pointless, although I will admit, some people do reply... which means I actually have to scan through all my DMs to make sure I didn't miss the few rare real responses.

I personally don't like sending auto response tweets.
