In a few months I am going to start up an authority site that will hopefully grow to about 1k keywords, and 1mill views/year.

Is it better to go with sort of EMD (It cannot be an EMD, cuz of all the keywords) but should I go with one of the terms I want to rank for, or should I go with something unique and catchy but does not necessarily have anything to do with whats on my site?

If i was you id go with a catchy non EMD, im using a combination of 2 keywords to make one random word.. something like red widgets.. so domain name would be redgets.com and building links with "keyword redgets", "redgets keyword".. The site is only new and im still in the middle of building it but it's flying up the serps... middle of page 2 now for a 4 or 5 1500 - 4000 exact match keywords, and i have a line or 2 content on each page.. also been using a lot of social signals with youlikehits using a combination of domain name, and domain name plus keyword as "anchor text"

I prefer a branding name for an authority project. Something catchy, quite original.

EMD domain names are great for little projects (with authority ambition, at least). BTW, EMD are quick riskier nowadays.

I would go for a domain name that looks cool and is interesting/looks interesting in SERP's. EMD's are not too important today, content of the site defines it anyway.

For authority, I think you're better offer including your niche + brand in the domain. If it's nutrition it would be something like, SlimQuickNutrition.com

Go with PMD, if your topic is dog.. I would prefer aboutdogs.com or anything like that so it can cover your related keywords.

I too prefer branded names but emd with good content ought to be just fine. Forget about pleasing greedy g.

IMHO a good 8-15 letter .com will always look better than long tail PMD(S?), especially, if you must use slashes.

I've been building authority sites using the "repurposing a barely-relevant domain with existing powerful backlink profile" method to phenomenal success. I'm sure you've seen other sites taking this approach in your SERPtravels. For now, it works.

Just go to GoDaddy Auctions and search the most basic keyword you can think of for your niche. A long list of domains should pop up, export them all to CSV. Enter them 150 at a time into your bulk backlink analyzer of choice (if you have one that is) and find the one with the best proportion of price to PA/DA/Trust Flow/Domain Rank/whatever metric you go by these days. That's your guy.

If you don't have the money to buy an expired domain/bulk backlink analyzer than I would go with the keyword+modifier, I've found that works really well too.

If you go with the expired domain method (and if that domain has enough age and a solid enough link profile), than you can blast it all to hell right out of the gate. If you go with the phrase-match domain than I've found that using predominantly (like 60-80%) naked anchor text links yields some awesome results. Maybe that's just me though.

    Good luck!

That's what I do, but instead of putting up micro niche site I just use it to power up my money sites by building a relevant blog... oddly enough, syndicated articles from money site rank bit lower than actual origin...

Good tip though for peeps and good idea! +1 if you can find a good looking aged domain nearly relevant to your niche that looks and sounds good! Would definitely beat anything new you can register and with few plugins like link juice keeper you can actually retain all the links that otherwise would go to 404/not found due to lost pages.

With emds - your authority site will get tighter along the way - preventing you to expand on other related niches. Try something 8- words below that even your kinder kid can memorize. Much better 6 - words below or good 2 word domain that's broad.

So I ended up just getting a 5 letter domain from godaddy auctions. It has 78 links to it atm, and is catchy.. (6 year old domain)

I am going to just put up a landing page for the two months it takes me to be able to start on the project. (Likely just one 500 word post, then in two months I will expand it)

    Thanks for the help!

If you put a wordpress on it, put a link juice keeper plugin as soon as you change default links from /p=XXX to /my-cool-post/

and, congrats, hope your domain serves you well!

Haha yeah that method works too! Yeah a few months ago I was getting into the "how to pass a drug test" niche and I found the expired domain of an old drug testing agency just a couple towns over from where I live! It was $12 PR2 that had a freaking 24 Trust Flow in Majestic! Needless to say it is now the ultimate authority site.

YouTalkMedia - I think you made the right decision! Some nice age on it, solid backlink profile, and catchy name, three most important things imo when choosing an authority site domain. Good luck!
