I have just purchased a domain, and I am abouts to start my first BIG website.

I have been looking at competitor websites, and they have about 10 main categories, then about 10 sub categories, and about 20 even smaller categories inside them.

I can't come up with that many categories!

Can I add the articles to my site, and if there is no category/sub category for it, create one?

    Will it affect my SEO?

Do you even bother with subcategories? Shall I just make some main categories, then dump all the related articles in their?

Do you really need those sub-categories (will they have specific keywords to focus on) ?

Not in particular. It's just because I am trying to replicate the big guns in this niche, and they all have these little sub categories.

For an authority site, a large site with a lot of related content on related subjects, that you plan on working on for a long time, it is almost impossible to add in all the different categories at once.

I never do on a huge site and it has not been an issue for me.

For most themes, actually it might be something inbuilt to wordpress, your categories won't show if you don't have an article in them, so try to write an articles for EACH of your categories first, that way the structure is established, and you get a feel for the site and how you can develop it. As others have said the sub cats might not be obvious to you to begin with, so just stick to the top level categories, and the grouping ideas will reveal themselves over time.
