Attorneys General Want Craigslist 'Adult Services' Shut Down

Attorneys general in 17 states have banded together to call on Craigslist, the online classified ad website, to discontinue its adult services section.

"The increasingly sharp public criticism of Craigslist's Adult Services section reflects a growing recognition that ads for prostitution -- including ads trafficking children -- are rampant on it," the attorneys general said in a Tuesday letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster and founder Craig Newmark.

The letter continued: "We recognize that Craigslist may lose the considerable revenue generated by the Adult Services ads. No amount of money, however, can justify the scourge of illegal prostitution, and the suffering of the women and children who will continue to be victimized, in the market and trafficking provided by Craigslist."...

Do they honestly believe that shutting Craigslist Adult Services would prevent the trafficking of women and children in the sex trade? All these people will do is go underground or start their own sites (if they haven't done so already).

I'd have to side with the attorney generals on this one. Besides the fact that I hate Craigslist, we don't need a bunch of women and children getting themselves into bad situations.

Also, if Craigslist gets a lot of bad press, people will start looking for alternatives to Craigslist. I'd love to see another classified ads website emerge as a viable competitor to Craigslist.

Remember when Myspace was the big thing, and then it got all the bad press for little girls meeting up with old men. Everyone moved to Facebook.

yes, perhaps you're right
i also think they'll go underground and/or already went underground
but CL is one of the biggest sites with huge amount of traffic and it's widely open to the public - nothing new here - so it shouldn't have to let these people (pimps, human-traffickers) doing their work on this very convenient, profitable way and at the same time let them extending their market and they're feeling perfectly safe when they're posting their ads like they're selling used iPods...it's just plain wrong
 
funny story that just happened. I used the cell of a 75 year old long time friend to verify account, he was hesitant he finally said " well with the whore getting murdered on there i dont want them coming after me.... i dont need no f-ing massage"
