Hey guys, this is a lesson on health insurance.

I'll get right to it. A couple days ago, my friend was in a soccer accident. The specific details about the injury are still forthcoming but from what I gather, some guy ran into him and drove him into the pole breaking his shoulder, jaw bones, and severing part of his optic nerve. I'd show you pictures but quite frankly I just would rather not be that disrespectful and honestly I don't want to get too emotional right now.

He came from the hospital today and guess what his bill was: $18,000 to fix his optic nerve for starters. And that's not including all the pain medication he needs because currently he's getting NONE. Now they wan't $9,000 upfront. Yes, he did not have health insurance because he's a student > 24 and apparently the university he's in does not subsidize that. Even if they did, he'd still be looking at a few thousand to pay. How can a single student afford that?

I'm not begging for anything here or anything, I just wanted ideas on how I can help with this from anyone who's been in a similar situation. I certainly don't have that kind of cash lying around. I just want to know WHAT exactly I can do?

This is what I'm thinking:

1. Create a website
2. Create a fan page
3. Create a youtube account
4. Create a twitter account

Drive massive traffic to all for and just try to contact anyone that can drive traffic and fund raise on the website. All payments would go directly to the hospital. Now the problem is he needs to go into surgery within the next few days otherwise he's going to have a serious problem and will very likely lose his eye, if not more. Just lemme know what's up guys and how I can help.

My first recommendation would be to sue the guy who did this to him but that could take a while.
Eventually he would most likely win for medical expenses and for pain and suffering.

Maybe a Kickstarter? But I'm not sure if they allow this sort of thing or not.

Yeah man, that was my first thought as well but he needs the help immediately.

Hey man, do you have any more details on this? Feel free to pm me.

if he is in the USA, he can apply for medicaid. They will take care of him till he is well and pay up the past bill I think

Like the previous poster said just get emergency medicaid and it will cover everything.

Either way I have never heard of a US hospital turning away a patient in need of surgery. You are suppose to get the bill afterwards and then figure out how to pay.

first of all pray to God for His help, and then get to work. Id say look at any events coming up in the next few days, soccer matches, baseball etc stuff that has a huge crowd. And then do the usual, find a live stream for free, setup a blogpage, embed the stream onto the blogpage, content lock it, set it to go after 2mins or so. Drive traffic to it through forums etc by saying oh im watching it here, and make money through the surveys people do to unlock it. Again drive traffic, these events should have massive followings.
Again you can do this on facebook, pinterest go crazy. But keep this as one of your plans have others running in tandem ok mate, like the help a friend charity facebook page. All the best, but that right there is something you can set up now, and do it for free really.

Ask to speak to an ombudsman. If they are financially destitute, most hospitals have a program to help that. My hospital, if you can verify there's no income, will cover it all. They usually have programs set up for sliding scale fee adjustments.

Thank you so much for the advice guys. I'm still open to ideas. For the record he's not a US citizen and is on a student visa that's why the whole hospital situation is so complex. I'm gonna be up today all night i think.

This doesn't make sense. You can still be eligible for medicaid even if you are not a us citizen.

I sent him the link, we will definitely be following up on it. I'm just relaying what the hospital said. Just keep him in your prayers guys please.

i will continue to keep your friend in my prayers bro. He is going to pull through this dont give up hope

Suing for a soccer accident is likely to be a waste of $$. I'm not sure about the USA law surrounding this, however, in Australia you cannot sue for a sporting accident unless the offender was completely outside the rules of the game. He would just need to prove it was an accident and he wouldn't have to pay a cent. When you engage in a sporting match, either as a participant or a observer, you are declaring that you understand the risks involved.
