My blog is only able to compete if I can focus on long tail keywords. (This isn't a throwaway blog). If I am supposed to not use keywords in the majority of my anchor text how will Google know to send traffic to my more specific keyword instead of sending it to my competitors broader keyword.
    Example:
SCUBA - SCUBA Fins - Mylar SCUBA fins.
What is the best way to let SE know to send people looking for Mylar SCUBA fins to my page if we are instructed not to use keyword anchor text.

Are internal links going to be key indicators to Google to know what a page is about?

I would still use keyword anchors, but you need to mix it up alot with generic anchors and domain variations. Also the on page content should be optimized for the keywords.
