There are so many items for sale in this category. you could do all sorts of things. lots of people sell scrap-booking supplies, some people offer digital guides etc. or backgrounds. logos, banners, you name it.

I'm sorry I must have missed your post on the second page.

    Well few things
    1) you are not allowed to sell anything (get a job) or start a business on that visa right?
    2) are you getting a green card? If so you can get an SSN that way.
    3) I would not advise going around that system as the consequences could be severe.

Does Etsy now make an SSN mandatory? If it does try and work with a friend to start a business together. Have them do the financial side you can manage the products.

I would also recommend posting this in the JV section if you have not already, there are some great people there that I'm sure will be interested in contacting you. Thanks for the post and congratulations on raising funds on Kick-starter.

Thanks for the advice, I haven't yet. We are in the beginning stages of just releasing our product to the US market as we have been in negotiations with some big box retailers who were looking for exclusivity.

Hmm I had some courses laying around about Etsy but never got to it as I know it's for people crafting stuff.

I've been thinking, in my country I know a couple in their 50's who are crafting and selling steampunk items. I checked their stuff and there are some cool things in there only they got like zero marketing skills. Their website is a mess and I doubt they ever heard of Etsy so maybe I could do something with that.

The only problem I have is that shipping from my country to the US is pretty expensive and would definitely increase prices substantially as it won't fit in envelope and could have some weight to it.

You think that's a niche that could be worth it on Etsy?

Yes they do require to have SSN now to receive the money. I will try to have a part-time job in term of getting a SSN soon.

Well not just crafting stuff. you can sell manufactured goods but you just have to mention it in the about section of your shop. you can also sell vintage goods and craft supplies/tools etc.

Yeah tell them about etsy. I'm sure they would do well there, Steampunk is still pretty big with the Etsy crowd. That's the biggest problem for people being outside of the US. the conversions are half if not worse. shipping times and prices are a major factor in most peoples buying decision. Why does Bezos go to all that trouble to ship things out fast, its because he knows that's one of the deciding factors. as for the niche yeah steampunk is still big on etsy

if you came in on a student visa you wont be able to just change that up. believe me i know all about that crap as i emigrated from the UK. Its not as simple as it seems.

I covered this in one of the questions above, in fact there was some really good info in that post so do yourself a favor and read the whole thread but to answer your questions I never used paid ads.

Hi, You can get a lot of exposure and free traffic from social media. You can also easily get a LOT of traffic from Reddit if you make the right post and have a few accounts of your own. It's all about spending time building up resources like multiple accounts/profiles on social media sites so that you can leverage any posts you make. If you add some relevant hashtags to tweets then they will be seen by people guaranteed, the same goes for Pins, Facebook posts and Instagram posts. if you can automate much of this then you are laughing.

By far the best thing I have found for promoting etsy products is the tool in my signature, I happen to promote it as an affiliate looking for affiliates mainly but I use it to post etsy products and other products to all of those sites and just to be transparent the link in my signature is an affiliate link to that product so please bare that in mind. I plan on making a journey video of me using that tool and promoting it so keep your eyes open for that. I can't big it up enough and I have only just started to use it.

You can use it to pretty much automate the promotion of your products on those 4 main social media sites, if you use this or another program to set up posts automatically then you really can't lose. its all about the automation. If you are bootstrapping and dont want to spend on ads you need to drive free traffic from social media it's that simple!

As for having these things before hand it of course helps but you dont have to. For example if you have a small twitter account as long as you tweet with hashtags people will see your tweets no matter what. Same for Pinterest. If you add relevant info and make them rich pins they will do well. start with growing some profile and pages etc on some social media sites and then if you have a shop you can use them to promote the products.

@William702 thanks so much for creating this thread.
I'm a textile artist ( I make 100% handmade batik fabric) and I thought I could make some sales/money posting my works on etsy after I came across this thread. However, most of the batik sellers on etsy are based in the UK but I'm from W.Africa.
Don't you think my location might affect me from getting sales? You know, considering the shipment period+cost.

Great post, thanks for sharing those info .
Have you got any success with twitter ? How do you exactly do promotion there ? I don't use TW for promotion at all, but I give it a try recently with ecom, I had no success at all, I tried following the followers of accounts on the same niche, I got a very low Follow back rate (less than 1% in 24 hr), I tried also following the peoples who liked/RT the recent post of big accounts in the niche so I got active users, but nothing changed, it seems that doing proper targeting here is not as easy as fb, Would be great if you could give some advice about TW promotion, If the tool you are promoting is good enough I may give it a try.

To be honest yes, not only in terms of shipping costs and time but sadly West Africa does not have a stellar reputation in online dealings does it so yes sadly that's going to be an issue. You never know until you give it a try though.

Yes in fact it's Twitter that helped us get noticed in the early days. We had more followers than MAC, Urban Decay and Clinique combined and we were just a small shop on Etsy with a few thousand sales at the time. If you don't know who those companies are they are multi million dollar international cosmetics companies. We had the second largest account under health and beauty on lots of twitter ranking sites, we were second to only jeffree star at the time. Of course those were the early days of Twitter. Maybe I will start a thread explaining how I promote with twitter as this thread is more geared towards Etsy. The tool I am using is great, they have a free version so yeah you should give it a try.

Yeah making sure you have the right keywords stuffed into the listings, tags and titles helps a lot. Etsy is all about the SEO especially when it comes to listings showing up on google.

Thanks for this thread, I've read all of it and took some notes.

My shop has 42 sales since I opened it in october 2015, an average of $70 per item and 16 people favorited it.
It was running good because with those prices I was happy with 2 or 3 sales a month. I closed it in november 2016 because the amount of work was overhelming (is a made for order service), when I reopened it in february this year a lot of things had changed and it's going so slow.
Also a lot of people are offering the same service for half the amount but the quality is way worse.
When I search the keywords for my product I used to appear on the middle of the first page, now I'm appearing at the bottom of 3rd page, why is that?
I tried sponsored ads by etsy but even using that I never appeared on the first row of page 1.

    What am I doing wrong?

What is the consensus on 3D printed things on etsy, and if it was something that was not my IP would the shop get banned?
