Si I have a site that ranks #4 page 1 - I have better metrics that competitor at #3 Except for Number of Keywords ranked.

So how do I get more keywords ranked for diversity without taking focus away from keywords that are ranking well?

    Home Page:
Update your content with these keywords, by adding one or two paragraphs on the pages that you rank already.

Or create new content around these kws.

Thanks for that - makes sense - I would leave out home page and product category pages and concentrate on articles on the site - would that be the way to go?
    cheers,

Thanks for that - longtail keywords is a good idea -

So in addition to adding content would this work? ..... in existing content make a link using a phrase in that content as a longtail internal link to a category for example then add that link to a resources page on another site I own and then ask Google to re-index that resources page - that way Google is seeing that specific link containing longtail keywords in existing quality content?

    1. A sub-domain (i.e. blog.yoursite.com) is considered a separate website. If you go this route, your blog will be treated just like a brand new website.
2.Links to sub-domains do not benefit the root domain (excepting the www sub-domain). When your blog content earns links, those links will not count towards your main site if you place your blog on a sub-domain.
So placing blogs in folder or sub folder will help you to increase your keyword ranking. i prefer sub folder.

Many thanks for your detailed response. I will set up a Wordpress blog into a sub folder. So I currently have a Blogger.com blog, not very active and not a lot of traffic - copying posts from that blog into the new Wordpress blog on my site would likely not be a good idea as it would not be not unique to the site (even if the content is uniquely mine :)) ... right?

    cheers

It confuses the search engines into thinking that the content is not original.
Having the same content on two sites will severely hurt your link popularity.
Or you have to give original source where you have first posted that content.

Thanks for that - so how to you give attribution to the original content site or post? is it a simple text statement at the beginning of the content or should it be contained in a particular tag <> so that the bots know not to penalize? I ask because I have used the same content on 2 sites, one a .com the other a ccTLD on the understanding that Google apparently allows that situation for 'duplicate content' ..... should I make the attribution statement on the second of the 2 that was made live?
    cheers

Your attribution should be in second site. And it should be within tags<>.
