I am getting a lot more SEO clients lately just because of word of mouth, and it has been going very well. I am looking for a tool I saw a while back that would tell you all the keywords your competitor ranks first page for. I have been searching here for the past 15 minutes, and I know it has been asked a few different times before, but I cannot find what I am looking for.

What is the best tool for me to add my competitor URL into and have it find all the keywords that it ranks for?

Will it also work for all subdomains and directories?

    TIA

Check out SEMrush. You enter in your website and it'll give you all the keywords the website ranks for and more.

Uh, my competition has 2,719 keywords. That's probably not good for me, huh?

You should determine it with how many backlinks your competitor keyword has.
Not all the backlinks of your competitor keywords.

    Perfect thanks.

Read on for a funny story:

I live in a smaller town, 50k population. I went to check out a property last week and the seller of the house started talking to me, asking me specific questions about what I do. It turns out that he read my email and checked the links in my signature, twitter, my business website, linkedin, ect. He then told me that he owns the largest web development company in town, I have heard of them before. Some of the services they offer on their website homepage are online marketing, social neworking, SEO, PPC consultation, mobile design and marketing, social marketing, ect. Basically all the things I do.

Well he basically came out and admitted that I alone am about as valuable as his whole team, and that he was interested in having me consult (I can land any client when meeting face to face, this one I just had no idea about).

He contacted me again today I think he is pretty serious about trying to get me to help his company out.

Now his company developed the site for another company in town that claims to be the biggest SEO experts in the area, and they boast a lot on their site. His company even has some pretty bold claims. So I decided to check out what they rank for, and what other companies around here are ranking for (real estate around here is very high), and basically I can run this town as far as SEO easily by early 2012!

I am even thinking of trying to outrank the SEO firms for their own EMD if I can, they all have hardly any backlinks and nothing quality. Got some great ideas, can't wait to shake things up...

I live in a city with about 750k people and there is very little competition among companies. 50k damn, how is there even competing businesses with that many people?

Yeah that would not be good!

Thanks for the support, for "(my town) SEO" the top spots have less than 5 backlinks all from low PR sites, this is going to be easy.

Any tips on how to outrank a EMD?

    LOL!

There are probably more competing microbreweries here :)

The average home value here is over $520k and the next town over average home value is $1.015M so I bet there is a Realtor out there that would pay some $$$ to get the top spot!

Well the method i am using to find competitors KW targeted is easy.

Right click on the page + source code.

SOme people still fill the meta tag KW with the exact KW they are targetting.

Well, I use ?Keyword Country? to see keywords used by my competitors... It gives pretty good results. Also, it alerts me every time they insert new keywords into their campaign.

semrush I think is the best but there are a few others like spyfu, keywordspy and a new one on the block is ahrefs (they check the top 100 all the others check I think the top 20 search results)
