I have never had to do this, but in this case I am using WP as an LP and I have found two awesome themes to test but both have potentially distracting links in the footer.

When you remove one, it calls you out with a big red banner at the bottom and says you violated the TOS.

The second just stops working until you restore the footer.

    Any ideas guys?

It's clearly due to some "protection" code within the theme, but it's hard to help you if we don't know what themes they are.

There is callback , you need to link the theme source here, change footer.php with your site name , do not try to delete it.
Use file manager , then from dashboard - go to appearance - themes - editor - footer.php

most likely there's a function in functions.php that is checking the footer for it's back link. Take a key element / word / url / etc from the warning and search for it in the functions.php or any file called from that file. If you don't fine it look for base64 encoding, decode it and see if it's what you need to remove.

Worst case, if after all that fails... PM me and I'll help :)

You could try and edit the source code but I think with free themes they wont allow you to do so because that's where they keep the backlinks to their sites and affiliate links. That is really the only reason the theme developers are willing to give their themes away. Every time someone installs their theme they get a backlink to their site and potentially that site could grow in page rank and be worth more than paying for that theme would be. Anyway you can give it a try but I have done it before and it made my theme no longer work

This is just a simple wordpress plugin I coded which will remove the footer links as well as the BLOGROLL from wordpress themes. You can modify it as you like.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I have some things to try now. Yeah I was aware that it was due to them being a free theme, but this is BHW. ;) If I make some money with their themes I will compensate them. They are kick as themes. One theme has links to 5 different websites in it. That just wont work.

I will try to see what I can do with what has been suggested. Thanks again!
