I read on the forums that a number of members run SEO consultancies, I was wondering how you guy obtain new business. Is it direct marketing, referrals, cold calling, search engine results?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't actively promote myself, I used to be in a web design company as the SEO guy, now they refer clients to me, then I pick up a few through friends of friends and sometimes through word of mouth. If I were trying to do it seriously I'd make a really professional looking website and then get on the phone cold calling all day. Once you have the intial client base you get word of mouth referrals but the intial few is the toughest I think.

I've done cold calling before not for SEO but another service I was offering, it can be nerve wracking and the majority of people wil reject you, but that one person that says yes is your life blood, once you have one you realise cold calling does work and its worth it, there are 1000's of business's out there, SEO is one of those products that has unlimited potential its just a matter of calling hundreds and hundreds of people, don't stop.

As an example a friend of mine used to work in a UK call centre, he'd cold call 40 people a day trying to sell broadband, out of 40 he'd get maybe 2 people. Get your yellow pages up and just keep going.

You raise some good points. I often wondered about cold calling and whether it would be worth it. After speaking with people who run non-SEO businesses, they all agree. Getting your first customer is the hardest part. I think you have to be careful not to fall into the trap of offering your services at the lowest price as you are desperate for work, as rather than think it's a great deal, most people think "scam" or "this guy must be poor quality".

If you are looking for online clients then you should try and rank for internet marketing keywords. Once you have then put your results together in an ebook and post them on various forums.

For offline clients you can get get some fake businesses ranked and then show them to the real couterparts (setup fake restaurant and then show a restaurant your results).

People are more than willing to pay for SEO services but they want to know that they are paying for something that produces results not something that depends on the competition.

Get one client and tell him that you can discount your service charges if he can refer some local business guys. This works like a charm.

what's worked for me in the past is to be an affiliate for a brand.
Then rank high for the brand for Google.
Contact you aff mgr and indicate your seo skills and would like to do this for some of your other properties but would like a higher payout.

Prove your worth and they'll bend over backwards for ya

Direct mail works sometimes, however depending on where you are, you could have several competing companies. Email marketing can work, however most companies receive dozens of similar emails daily. I've never tried cold calling.

What I've found to work best is getting a client through direct mail. Then offering incentive for referrals. Such as 10-20%. Then you offer the same deal for more referrals. Just build it up from there.

    Network with web design firms.

Offer to do their SEO for free, or cheap, in exchange for referrals. After about 5 or 6 you will have more referrals than from these web design companies than you can keep up with.
