I received a PM from a newbie the other day and I'm quoting the most interesting part:

Now, this took me back to the days when I started.
Instead of replying to the guy privately, I'd post in here so others can read this too... without revealing the name of the guy who PMed me, of course.

    1
The thing is, we all need to start somewhere. If you have no money to start with, no experience and you're not willing to work hard but want to find shortcuts, then Internet Marketing is not for you, sorry.

IM doesn't mean "METHODS" - it means
    - Working hard the smarter way.
    - Failures
    - Let downs
    - Hardships...

But after you reach a certain point, it means
    - Saying "FUCK YOU" to your boss.
    - Working an hour a day
    - Freedom
    - Happiness

So, guys, do not look for shortcuts - that is not right attitude. Once you've made your mind to work hard, read the next part.

    2.
Do not be a Jack of all trades, master of none.
Rather master one trade, and be an authority in that trade. Jumping from one thing to another will get you nowhere.

Calm down, Take a deep breath and ask yourself in all honestly "What are you passionate about?" Got the answer from your inner self? Okay, start working hard on what you're passionate about.

If you're passionate about coding, start working from this very moment on improving your skills and set a goal like "One year from now, I want to be an elite developer"... work very hard and once you're there, you'll make tons.

That's just an example - the same applies to all fields be it SEO, CPA or anything.

So, in a nutshell - pick a field you want to master and don't sit back until you master it!

    3.

Don't try to be spoon fed. There's hundreds of thousands of posts on BHW - search around and more than likely you'll find a solution to your problem. If you don't, ask on BHW then. We're a great helping community but if you post a thread asking "How can I make money", expect the replies to be like this:
    Don't be this kid!

Hope this helps some of you.
    Have a great weekend. :)

This thread should be stickied. I see threads everyday started by desperate noobs who don't even read anything and their first post is, "how do I make money"?!!

There is great info on bhw for starters, and this thread is one of them.

Read and take action! Good luck :)

Great thread and I couldn't put it any better myself. Start with the time consuming money making methods & invest. Over the last 2 years my income has gone from $40 a month to much much more from investing into bigger and better projects

There is so much information on this website! As a noob maybe I should step back and ask myself if I have been working as hard as I could be. I think the answer is no. Why the hell have I not learned html yet? There is no excuse for that. I am going to make it a priority to learn that today.

blame that on "world renowned, self-acclaimed gurus" that pitch/spread IM to the general masses as an easy alternative route to a millionaire lifestyle without batting an eyelid and promises of banking $$$ without too much work.

So the results? is what you have received in your PMS because that mindset is already "embedded" subconsciously to the newbie IM community who came from those teachings/thoughts.

I don't think most people doing IM are passionate about IM, they are much more passionate about the "easy money" made thru IM.

This is coming to an end, thankfully. New FTC regulations (I interpret...) mean that if you promise those kind of results, you'll have to prove it or get shut down. Also, bogus testimonials might get subpoenaed. Fun times

In regards to IM though, I started because I was selling my written content for people for years and years and decided to get in on my own.

I'm trying to un-shit the internet. I'm trying to do work and provide a service to increase the quality of the internet. Sure I'll be writing and posting about slight nonsense (read: niches), but it won't be illegible spun crap. It'll be grammatically accurate spun crap :) (I actually don't spin as much as I rewrite, which is probably why I don't make as much money as I could be)

I got in IM, coincidentally, as soon as a bunch of changes came to crack down on spammers and I saw it as my opportunity to legitimize the internet. Part "altruism"- with a paycheck- to clean things up online a bit, and part desire I've had for ages to really help develop the web.

I've always been good at making others money, so why not do the same for myself while keeping my integrity and feeling like I'm making a difference for the people I work with directly, and for the people who simply enjoy being online?

well... too bad if you are referring to the new FTC business opportunity Rules cos these "educational services" or ?Learn how to XXXXX? programs doesn't fall under these new regulations. The new rules apply more to advertisers' "turn-key business opportunity" type offers that affiliates are peddling under CPA networks.

Emm , I guess thanx to landing pages everywhere telling ppl that they can make 10000000000000000000000000000000$ / minuts without doing anything ( like u can actually make something in one minute !! ) makes some ppl think that u are hiding the ultimate truth to the ultimate money.
The problem is there is actually no secrets !! It's just like ANY JOB , you work and u earn for ur work ( With some differences ) . However u can't expect messages will stop from thread or two :D

Well Written Thread after all but who listens :)

I beg to differ a bit and while I see merits in quite a few points of the OP, I'm not sure i agree entirely with all of this. I always read a lot of hype even when ppl try to dissect what IM or even blackhat is...

Making a profit online is not different from most other businesses: if you wanna make 5K or 10K a month you gotta find something that works before anything else. Now, just to be clear and not reiterate false myths: chances are that the area that can take you to these profits is NOT what you like to do. Sometimes it is most time it isn't, you gotta live with this, it's economics 101. Even a lot of startups funded by venture capital have to change the core business (aka change what they liked) to survive, go figure the lone online marketer... :)

This mantra-become-superstition that I keep reading "choose what you like, you're gonna be fine" gotta go once and for all... Of course the more you like something the longer you'll be able to work with a passion, but it's totally unrelated to the potential the area you like has to make a sustainable profit. Sometimes what you "like to do" has got the potential to make the amount of money you have in mind, but most of the time this is NOT the case... Maybe that boring tedious work of making hundreds of websites to create your list of hungry buyers is something you hate to do, but maybe it is what yields the most potential... Conversely maybe you love coding in vala the most, but there's not a market large enough for it, and so forth.. That's also the main reason imo why a lot of ppl fail at making a sustainable income online: unrealistic preconceptions.

Also, the "smarter not harder" thing is one of those grossly exaggerated statements. Of course it's true, but it's only the second stage of a business plan. The first thing in IM, like with every other offline business is finding something that makes a profit and can be scaled. This is not trivial as it sounds or as a lot of ppl make it sound... If was so easy in the entire world there'd be only entrepreneurs... Getting there might take a few years of ups and downs, no matter how smart you think you're working. For the same reason it makes me cringe when I see ppl that make the quick -unsustainable- 100 on sharecash and talk about leaving their path of standard education...

Bottom line is: there's a lot of money to be made online but you'll need a plan, not unlike any other business career you choose. Making a quick buck is easy with the shittiest methods, creating a sustainable, long-term stream as I seem to understand you're looking for might take time: deal with it.

On the bright side, IM has a huge advantage over a lot of other business areas because you can literally reach ppl in the entire world at the touch of a button that was something unheard of before the previous decade... And YES sometimes, you'll find a hack that will make you thousands a day, not months but you need to develop the mindset of focusing on long-term plans if you wanna live decently with IM. And I agree be really willing to fail before succeeding because it'll probably happen a lot.

    Best of luck!

"DO NOT BE THIS KID" - bk071.

You speak the truth, honestly, we've all been in square one, its what makes or breaks most of us,the ones who know to step in the right direction, are the ones who make it through on the other end.

Internet Marketing offers a lot of benefits that traditional marketing does not, there is a lot to learn about building webpages, seo and promoting websites.

Brilliant suggestions, number 2 is probably the most relevant to people on this forum, just because of the mountains of free info on almost every IM topic, the key is to stick to one method that works and make it your own by adding unique twists that you will learn through experience

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't think that's good advice for him in his situation.

For one, I can tell he isn't wanting to be spoon-fed, he just needs direction. (which is why he pm'd you in the first place)
Many methods shared here requires at least domain and hosting, and honestly, if anyone here started all over again with $0 none of us would want to be doing surveys / ppc. It's super low profit and tough work.

And get real, I don't think anyone here is willing to spend 1 year of hard work learning coding before making his first IM buck.

And to the person asking... there are a couple decent free methods here on BHW like Youtube+CPA offers / Pinterest+Adsense on blogger etc... use search

You'll start slow. But once you get the cash, reinvest in hosting/tools/education/whatever. It's important to keep reinvesting your cash to get higher returns / access to more moneymaking opportunities. (but do it wisely of course)

And once you decide what you're going to focus on, build a damn list of potential buyers. It's so important and the benefits are so huge, I'm not sure why I didn't do it myself despite hearing the same advice months ago.
