I'm just curious as to how many of you are in IM as a career. I've taken an interest in it as a progression from web developer to SEO to IM, although I'm really just getting started.

Thing is, I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be doing it as a full time career. Part of me feels that some bits of IM are a bit seedy, that I'd be a bit embarrassed to tell people at a dinner party that I was an affiliate marketer for acai berry stuff or forex schemes. Sure, I realise there's potentially more money in IM for the big noises than there is for say a lowly computer programmer (my background) but it seems a bit more dignified to be a programmer.

For those of you who are in IM as a career, how have you progressed? Have you moved upwards to bigger websites, or providing services, or writing your own Clickbank products instead of marketing others? Or have you just kept on churning out the autoblogs and Adsense honeypots?

For those of you at the lower levels, do you plan to stay in IM, or are you going to make some money and cash out, moving into another sector, like real estate or whatever?

I'm just curious as to the mindset of everybody on here.

Blackhat-wise, rape it as hard as you can while you still can. I think most people eventually cash out and then go and do something legit, whether it's running a legit internet enterprise or doing something offline.

i dont touch blackhat methods anymore

google's got too many phd's working for them.

the ironic thing is, lots of blackhatters get in this business to "not work anymore" and "get rich quick".

but, they seem to all work harder than my whitehat friends... who own real sustainable long term websites.

Eventually you have to decide if you want to be a professional grifter, or a professional business man, who sells something of value for a fair price.

Yes, I'm in it for the long run, I couldn't think about doing anything apart from IM.

Taking the moral high ground is nice in theory, but I would say that 9/10 people who have made it big in the affiliate marketing space got there by doing something a bit shady, even if they appear squeaky clean now.

In the industry with which I am most familiar (adult), all the big fortunes were made my mailing, totally hardcore SE spam, banging cards etc.

actually professional businessman world is as shady or prob even shadier than IM world itself. Im sure if you have been into import/export business or at least know someone who have been doing businesses with huge companies in your country you already know what Im talking about. Dealing with corrupt people and bribing someone from purchasing division are just normal things to do.

I agree though that IM world is not very sustainable.

you do not have to be an affiliate of acai berry or whatnot enlarger to be in the IM field. How about having a couple of nice informative web sites that pull in a full time moola. Wouldn't that be nice? Having a small but well crafted sites network will be a great move if you are worried about what ppl might think if you say you are an IMer. You can then show off your sites to them and say you are making the web a better place or whatever.

I'm in it for the long haul be it whitehat or blackhat. Blackhat can mean so many different things to different people. It doesn't mean fighting against google.... as if playing the SEO game is the only way to make cash!

I think we live in a blackhat world! I turn on tv and LOL at the trial + rebill hustles that are peddled on commercials.

One of my goals is to take my marketing to TV, Radio, and Billboards.

Why do you care what other people think of what you do? Most people are sat in 9-5's making other people rich and are miserable.

I literally couldn't care less of what people think... chances are I make more money with them and have a better lifestyle so f**k them!

If you're really concerned about "what to say at a dinner party", just say you design websites for a living. No-one understands the industry anyway.

I got nothing to be embarrassed of. if people asked me what i do, i would say running adult websites with at least 10 new models everyday and selling adult toys as well! ;)

Yes, I am in here for life. I have never made a dime offline and I`ve actually never tried to make it there. I love IM even though it has a couple of minuses which include all the social aspects mostly.
