It depends... most ask for payment up front. Or ask for half half.
To be honest, the people I've met on here are probably the most genuine people I've met anywhere. I think reputation comes first, always. I've had people who have paid me back in full as work I haven't been happy with, even though I paid them in full up front.

It is common. You should deliver your product only after payment. You don't need to get prepayment but show your work first and deliver only after payment.

Typically for SEO services, payment is always collected upfront in order to not run into the issue you mentioned.
For one-off projects like web design, the typical industry standard is to set-up milestone payments, usually in the format below:
35% upfront
35% upon completion of the project
30% prior deployment of the site onto the clients server

Okay, going forward you should charge the entire cost upfront, specially for a one-time project like this that doesn't have multiple deliverables.
