I've stepped away from Internet Marketing for awhile because I got a 9-5 and have been putting in a lot of overtime. I got my paycheck the other day and realized how much more I like working at a company instead of doing IM. Just less competition out there for you guys, as if I was any to start with.

I was wondering if people here felt like they get paid for what they're worth for doing IM. Looking back I made some money, but if it was an hourly job I would have made more then I profited. All of the menial tasks could have been outsourced if I had the money. Making twitter, facebook, yahoo, hotmail, youtube, gmail, accounts. I'm sure I could have managed my time better, but in the long run I make more money offline then I've ever made online.

What about the perks you say? Working in your underoos, setting your own schedule, doing what you want when you want to. For some people that's more of a deterrent to get work done then an asset. If you don't proactively set goals and get to accomplishing them you end up spending all day watching videos on youtube or playing computer games and you're broke.

Sure I have to be on someone's time schedule, have to do something I don't really enjoy, have to play office politics and wear normal clothing. I also get a solid paycheck every other Friday. Working gives my life a sense of structure. I've seen a couple of methods on BHW here recently I might do if they prove fruitful but for the most part I'm happy with the money I'm making now. If I want more, I just work overtime. Can't get overtime with IM. You may work it, but not always get paid more for it.

When the minimum requirement becomes your maximum effort, the result is mediocrity. Are You Getting Paid What You're Worth?

Being an employee you get paid less than you are worth, so that you company can profit from your labor (on private companies, that is). Being self-employed you're going to get paid exactly for what you're worth, market laws apply.
So in that sense, everybody doing IM full time is getting paid what they are worth, for that matter.

It sounds like you need to be baby sat and told what to do to get things done.

Enjoy your soul crushing low paying 9 - 5 where you exchange your time for money. You don't work.... you don't get paid. IM lets you leverage income and time if you know how to use it effectively.

lol people here are fun. Keep your job, honestly it's better than IM. Why? (I don't know what you are doing, ill take my day job as exemple)
    - I meet politicians everyday, very useful in north america
    - In 30 years (I know its long) I am 100% sure I will have 75% of my last year income for the rest of my life
    - Free insurance, credit for gym, studies(certificates or going to any university)
    - Did I mention contacts? I mean, its fucking useless to talk on skype w/ all the called "gurus", get IRL contacts, start your company while working, get high priced contracts because you have the contacts.
    - Free parking (lol)
    - Free diner, cofee lol

So you rather like to _work_ for someone else, instead of "working" your ass off at home for a couple of weeks and after that, the money rolls in like button clicking?

Of course, money comes not that easy (though sometimes it does), but i enjoy working where when and how long i want more than anything else.

Furthermore, im thinking about my future, and in my opinion IM brings me way more steps closer to my dreams than any other job could do.

You guys shouldn't disrespect 9-5 jobs. Yeah, IM is a great lifestyle, but it can't be something that everyone does. First of all, it's really, really hard. Second of all, if no one had a job the world wouldn't function. We need 9-5 workers to work for companies and the government in order to keep our society functional. Someone needs to bag our groceries, manage our grocery stores, and balance the books in the grocery stores' corporate offices. Someone needs to work in our police forces, fire departments, and militaries. Someone has to be our secretaries, managers, doctors, and lawyers. IM is like being a merchant. Merchants have been around for thousands and thousands of years, making money and growing rich while working for themselves, on their own time, but only a few people have what it takes to be merchants and even fewer have what it takes to become wealthy merchants. IM is the same way, we'll always be relatively small group of free people in a world of workers. We're like elites in that sense, but IM is not a universal solution that will set the world free and put an end to work. It's merely an escape route for those who go looking for it.

A job is a job at the end of the day! BUT i hate the fact that i KNOW how much im going to earn in the day (regular job) and no matter how hard i work, i will still recieve the same pay check and the only way to earn more is to get promoted!

With IM, YOU dictate how much you earn and how many hours you put in! When you start earning and realize how simple it can be, that is when you start to respect the freedom that it gives you! .. There is no greater job!!

There's nothing wrong with a 9-5, and theres nothing wrong with being in business for yourself. It's all a personal decision that you make for what's best for you. No need for one "side" to bash the other when there are obviously advantages and disadvantages of both.

Depends on your 9-5 job... do you like it ? are you passionate about your job ?
Definately if you are independent, self employed the potential for more $$$ is much better but again its not easy to get started.

I work full time a regular job in consulting. used to love it but am starting to get frustrated with the low pay.. I get a fixed salary in double digits while my company is making 6 figures off my efforts. Is that even fair ? I dont think so.

It is up to you man to decide.
    I tried 9-5 job. I don't like being told. It is a modern-time slavery.

Some people is not suited for IM. Me, I am not suited for 9-5 job. Not because I can't but it is just my mind doesn't allow myself to be ordered by someone.

Everyone has their own choice. I don't mind people work 9-5 job. But for me, I will never ever back to 9-5 job and told by people to do what the company want you to do. Definitely not the life I want it to be.

One thing in common for people who does IM :

    WE LOVE FREEDOM

I'm not gonna bash you, as others are here. As I see from your post that you weren't really bashing IM, just raising legitimate questions to us fellow BHWers.

I understand yer position, you enjoy the structure, and it's been more fruitful for you to work your 9-5. I respect that.

But for me, I feel like working a 9-5 is what makes it impossible to be paid what I'm worth. Sure I could work 40+hours a week in IM and not make any money, but when I do make money I make a lot of it. And I seem to notice a pattern that the amount of money I make is directly related to the amount of work and creativity I put into my IM projects.

Whereas in a 9-5, you get paid the same amount no matter what you do. You could be the main reason your company made a million dollars, but if your salary is just a salary, and no bonus is available, you've made no profit off of that large sum of money you made that company.

As has been said before, I IM because I want money. But I don't want money to buy nice things, I want money for the freedom it gives me. and even if I was working a 9-5 that paid me in yachts, I'd still be severely restricted to working five days a week 9-5. In IM, if I make a year's salary in a month, I have carte blanch to take the rest of the year as a vacation.

That's the kind of freedom I live for, and the freedom I make money for. To me, a 9-5 can't allow that freedom.

hey dude... I congratulate you on recognizing yourself as someone who isn't cut out for IM. But, I think you have to remember to calculate in the cost of gas the cost to commute into the equation. We IMers commute 3 seconds from our bed to our computers :).

I feel like I would go crazy sitting in front of my computer in my house all day. Social interaction is healthy, meeting people, work parties, traveling, free health insurance, all good things. That is why I will always have a 9-5 at least. Someday I want my IM career to lead me to opening my own business, having an office, and employing people to work for me.

Enjoy sitting in a boring sterile office cubicle for the next 30 years, while us IMers are lying on tropical beaches with cash rolling in on autopilot.

I think im getting paid what i'm worth.

Right now, im making about 5-10 on adsense every day. Im a college kid and basically not doing any work..

If I treated my IM job and actually working virtual labor 8 hours a day, being productive, I would get alot more money.
