I have noticed that I am ranking in g00gle for My link mysite(.)com/topic as well as mysite (.)com/tag. Many times my tag is outranking the topic and the topic ends up being out of the top 100 or even 1000 while the tag is ranking in the top 20's.

I read about a tag penalty for double content and I am wondering if it is real and what I need to do about it.

I wouldn't be to concerned as I think Google has a good handle on how wordpress works. The one exception is keyword stuffing using tags. You should avoid exceeding 5-10 tags per post.

You don't have to remove them; just use the, "NO follow" attribute on your tags and categories and the issue is resolved. There are a number of plugins that give you that capability. In this PIC I'm using, "All In One SEO" plugin and I'm in the admin control panel.

i also had the same problem but i don't think that it matters because tags help users to know related posts about your post and it also help in the interlinking of your site content

It's better to noindex + do follow tag pages if you have your tags set up properly.

No following too many internal links may be picked up by google as internal PR sculpting.

When unsure, go to an authority site that's doing well and view their source to see what they have on theirs. (this applies for a lot of things)

As for using robots.txt to block google from seeing it, this only works if you did this from the start before google indexed your tags. If it's already indexed, blocking it from robots.txt will stop future tags from being indexed but previous indexed tags will stay in their index for quite a long time because their unable to see your "noindex" request. (You could also use webmaster tools to remove the tags, but I advise against this)

I always turn off indexing for archives, tags and a search results as they are usually duplicate pages which basically fills your site with low quality pages. Link juice is wasted on them.

I would rather have a site with 36 high quality pages indexed than a site with 500 pages indexed filled with the same content.

Is internal PR sculpting being penalized by Google?

    Tag archive pages in Wordspress

I don't think that's true. If you have duplicate content and its indexed, then that is just that, duplicate content. You often find the tag archive pages if indexed, drop into the omitted results (the ones you have to click to show)

Listen to this man, he speaks wise words.

Most wordpress SEO plugins come with the option to 'noindex' author, tag, date, and catergory arhive pages. There are also stand alone plugins that will do it.

No-indexing but do-following my tags has killed all my search engine placements. I am thinking about allowing tag indexes.

    Before: I was getting...

    indexed and highly ranked: Tag

Now: The Article is indexed, but I am no longer getting traffic for my long tailed keywords. They are not ranking at all.
