This is a basic question, i'm not very good with ranking sites to make money (I'm into social media) so I'm wondering with all of the new updates to Google, do MNS still work and what are the downsides? Do you guys find that they are profitable in the long term?

    Yup, Microsites still works

Big sites are just a bunch of Microsites under same domain name, so you might want to try this too

They still work just fine! The downside is that ranking seems to be taking a bit longer, so its hard to just turn them into cash machines as fast as before, but it's still possible.

They do work, just Google for some of the famous health related product names and you will see lot of 2-5 pages affiliate sites ranking.

MNS still working as it was working before. You can do your research in Google related to your niche keyword and will see many micro niche sites.

Thanks for the responses guys, do you think that it's a better idea to use MNS or big sites for long term?

This use to be a good question with people preferring one or the other. Big sites all the way now though.
    1. EMD boost is very small after update
    2. You can silo sites and borrow the DA and keep link juice within your site to rank new pages much quicker
    3. The sandbox is killing newer churn and burn sites that haven't aged. Instead you can simply add on to larger sites which have aged over time

Good Q&A podcast on nichepursuits and nohatseo going over exactly this
