Thanks to BHW I came across a thread that showed how to make use of wikipedia's editing option and including your own links.

I've been monitoring a few articles in wikipedia for a week and made genuine changes, even managed to kick off a competing site as well.

I'd like to know if anyone has experienced a surge in traffic or anything measurable by having links from wikipedia.

    Thanks in advance.

Well a lot of it of course depends on how popular the wikipedia page is. I get about 500 visits each month thanks to 1 link. Luckily my link is the only link on the page so that might be why it is that high.

I also get a few hundred referrals from Wikipedia from one link, and there's about 4 others on the same page.

Is there a way to check how many hits/visits a wikipedia page gets?

Despite what people will tell you about nofollow having no effect on raising your rank in google, Wikipedia links are powerful as hell. Get every wikipedia link you can.

Yep I saw that message from Wikipedia, but I told myself what the heck. I'll grab every valuable link I can.

This is my first hack of sorts on wikipedia. I'll not get too excited and keep a close eye on this. Would appreciate if there is a way to check the number of hits a wikipedia page gets.

Doing a search, this wiki ranks on the 31st position. Not that impressive but if the page gives my site a push then no qualms considering I don't rank high for this particular keyword.

I tried to get my web link on a Wiki page a few years ago, but the editor removed it.

Are there any guides which shows the best ways to go about doing this?

I think a lot has changed in the past year or two.. The strategy I used was quite basic. Signed up an account, edited a couple of pages. Waited for a few days to see if it flagged anyone or anything..

Then took it a step close by removing one of the links and again did the waiting bit. Then went around to make more editorial corrections and adding new text.

Waited for 3 days and then put in my link. Ofcourse I ensured that the reference being mentioned is accurate to what's listed on my page.

I think the most important thing is that it has to be relevant to the article obviously and it can not be too commercial. You can not sell anything on the page to which the article links. That's just from my own experience.

The page I linked to has just a list of product reviews. So in a way it's not selling anything ;)

Interesting enough the previous link that I bumped off linked to a page that had direct affiliate links put into the page. So I guess I did something right here.

I put my social networking site on Wikipedia and it's stuck so far. Getting some traffic from them too. I still hate them though cause there hard to beat in the search results.

Yeah Wikipedia works wonders, it's just that sometimes you have to play it safe when it comes to adding your site on a certain page. But if you can work it out, I imagine you'll get decent traffic.

Would be awesome to create a tool that can find wikipedia sites / articles based on a keyword. If anyone understood that :p Or is it total useless?

Yes, definitely links from wikipedia has a greater value, however its not so easy to get a link in Wikipedia. Even if you edit a page and put your link they will monitor and remove it and may ban your ip address.

I was pointed to another article from Wikipedia that is ranked number two in G. Let me see how I fair in editing this one!! Might have to create an entirely new article on the keyword topic on my page first and link it back. Fingers crossed!!

I just edited the Zombie Survival Guide wikipedia page. I put my site as an external link as "Zombie Survival Guide Inspired." However, I also edited parts of the page that were vague to show that I did contribute and not just throw up a link.

    I guess we'll see what happens...:nap:

Good luck there with Wikipedia. Back in the day of ******** on wiki, atleast 20 of my articles were referenced and I benefited a lot from those links. To this day, many of the links still exist and more, including from other languages. After Panda, even with Wikipedia using direct quotes, my original articles with original journalism are being pushed down week after week.

I remember my drop in authority when they implemented nofollow on EN wikipedia back in 1997. I still haven't fully recovered. So, I don't believe wikipedia links carry much if any weight, even if they have been referenced for over 3 years.

    Just my €0.02

Your going after direct traffic, placing your links in WIKI..... not the serps....

Find laser targeted WIKI's and you're golden :)
