    Ofcourse they are.

Your backlinking profile should be as diverse as possible.

PS these Edu/Gov ones are more authoritative in my opinion.

no they are not - really bad for a site. Also, watching too much television gives you square eyes...give me a break and do some searching instead of a standard DP post

Edus and govs get respect from SE's, so of course they're good to have. You should have them as well as a wide variety of other backlinks in your linking portfolio for sites.

They matter only if you get them from blog posts. I dont think forum profile crap edus matter and they look so unnatural. Avoid them if possible

Off course these are worthy for any site.but having 100 edu and gov links with 1 other link is not good and will not be beneficial for your site.so make these but mix with others also

If you are creating profiles, it's good for Boosting the Profile authority of your other profiles of that 'user' within a network.

So, for example your website has logged-in users and each user has a profile. You can use that user, say 'GardenerBill' to build links across various forums including gardening forums and .edu or .gov forums to his 'profile' on your Gardening Niche website.
This is just one specific example, in which if you are creative enough have something like a favourite articles section, recently commented section, and even comment on your internal blog posts to a)build the word count of an blog post page with a comment and b) build a nice, natural page rank and authority flow on your website.

This of course is just a method I use because I like building links that 'make sense' on my sites and direct the pagerank flow in a way that's beneficial and non-suspicious.

Edu links are still effective and good to have. Link diversification is very important these days, so getting those links will surely help for the website authority in search engines.

Don't buy into the profile link crap. They aren't worth jack shit, not even for diversity. I have had plenty of testing and reviews of BHW services and profiles don't do anything. A .gov .edu blog comment is worth more, but still, contextual is best.

    Rhnkmr,

Backlinks (if they are indeed authoritative) from .gov,.edu,.org sources are good for your site however they are not in any way better than .com's,.net's or dot anything else (with equal authority). For example a .com with a PR 7 and a .gov with a PR7 are equal. There is nothing special about them.

Matt Cutts talks about this here,

    http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/follow-googlewmc-on-twitter/

    Hope that helps your efforts,

    Shawn
