Are EMD’s still relevant?

Picked up a new client to build a local seo site for his service.

He is requesting an emd. I was wondering do emd’s rank well or quickly? Is there any benefit to using them?

Also what form of emd works best (cityservice.com) or (servicecity.com)

100% still working in the local SEO space. PMD works too and I use this strategy wherever I can.

It's better if you can get the exact keyword as the domain name (Example: windowcleaningnewyork.com) rather than the reverse (Example: newyorkwindowcleaning.com) but both definitely work.

Alternatively, you can put a different word before the main keyword to get the keyword in your domain name (Example: topwindowcleaningnewyork.com)
 
While an EMD may offer a slight initial boost for specific keywords, it's not a sustainable long-term SEO strategy.
 
Google's algorithm has evolved, so EMDs alone won't guarantee rankings. They can help a bit with relevance, especially for local SEO, but quality content and solid SEO practices are far more important.
